Rock Sliders
Rock Sliders: Heavy Duty Protection for Your Truck, SUV & 4x4
Rock sliders are designed to protect your vehicle's rocker panels — the most vulnerable area on any truck or SUV — from trail damage caused by rocks, stumps, ruts, and obstacles you encounter off road. Your rocker panels sit low, they're exposed, and they're expensive to repair. A quality set of rock sliders takes the hit instead, letting your vehicle slide over obstacles without crushing the body underneath. Rock sliders are considered essential for serious off-roaders, often replacing flimsy factory nerf bars or running boards that crumble on the first rock they contact.
At Off Road Tents, we carry rock sliders from RCI, Cali Raised, CBI, RalliTEK, NYTOP, and Backwoods Adventure Mods — built for Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Ford Bronco, Ford F150, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, Lexus GX470, Lexus GX460, Lexus GX550, Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, and more. From budget-friendly rci rock sliders starting at $755 to premium bolt-on and weld-on options, we stock rock sliders for trucks, SUVs, and 4x4s designed to function on the trail and look clean on the street.

What Are Rock Sliders
Rock sliders are heavy-duty steel or aluminum bars that bolt or weld to your vehicle's frame, running along the bottom edge of the cab between the front and rear wheels. Their job is simple: when your vehicle slides over a rock, stump, or ledge, the slider takes the contact instead of your rocker panel. Without sliders, a single rock strike can crush body panels, crack paint, and cause thousands in repair costs. With sliders, the rock glides along hardened steel and your vehicle keeps moving.
Beyond trail damage protection, many rock sliders serve as a functional side step for lifted vehicles — making it easier to get in and out of trucks and SUVs that sit high off the ground. Some also feature built-in jacking points that serve as secure spots for high-lift jacks during tire changes or trail recovery. That's three products in one: protection, step, and jack point. It's why rock sliders are one of the first upgrades any serious off-roader installs.
Types & Configurations
Bolt-On vs Weld-On
Bolt-on sliders are DIY-friendly and removable — ideal for leased vehicles or anyone who wants to install without welding equipment. Most products in our collection are bolt-on. They use the frame's existing mounting points and come with all required hardware. Installation takes 2–3 hours with basic tools. Weld-on sliders provide ultimate structural strength and are best for intense off roading and rock crawling where maximum rigidity matters. They're permanently attached and require a welder, but they transfer impact loads directly into the frame without any flex at the mounting bolts.
Angle: 5° vs 20° vs Flat
Angled sliders (like the RCI 20-degree) sit higher and closer to the body, providing better ground clearance and protection for harsh rock crawling. The steeper the angle, the tighter to the body and the more clearance you gain. Flat sliders are positioned parallel to the ground, offering better protection from door dings and doubling as a step for daily use. They sacrifice some clearance compared to angled designs. 5-degree sliders split the difference — nearly flat for step function with a slight angle for improved clearance.
Kickout vs No Kickout
A "kickout" is a rear section of a slider that flares outward to prevent rear tire damage and push the vehicle away from obstacles. If you're doing serious rock crawling or tight trail work, kickout rock sliders protect your rear quarter panel and help guide your vehicle past rocks that could pin your rear tire. No-kickout designs keep the slider tight to the body for a cleaner look and slightly less width — better for daily driving and lighter trail use.
Cab-Length vs Wheel-to-Wheel
Rock sliders come in various configurations including cab-length and wheel-to-wheel designs. Cab-length sliders protect from the front wheel well to the rear of the cab — the most vulnerable zone. Wheel-to-wheel sliders extend all the way to the rear wheel, protecting the bed area on trucks. Cab-length is the most common and covers 90% of use cases. Wheel-to-wheel makes sense for long-bed trucks that regularly encounter trail obstacles along the full length of the body.
Materials: Steel vs Aluminum
Steel is the standard for rock sliders. It's highly durable and cost-effective for protecting against heavy rock damage. DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) tubing is preferred for serious off roading because it's stronger and more dent-resistant than cheaper steel options. Most rock sliders in our collection use DOM tubing with 3/16" steel frame plates. Aluminum sliders are significantly lighter than steel, improving fuel efficiency and reducing weight on your vehicle. They resist corrosion better than bare steel. The tradeoff: aluminum dents more easily on hard impacts. For heavy rock crawling, steel wins. For lighter trail use where weight matters, aluminum is a solid choice.

Rock Sliders vs Running Boards
Factory running boards and aftermarket nerf bars are designed for one thing: helping you step into your vehicle. They're thin, they're light, and they collapse the moment they contact a rock. A running board will not protect your rocker panel. It'll crush inward and cause more damage than having nothing at all.
Rock sliders are built from DOM steel tubing mounted directly to the frame. They're designed to absorb impact and let your vehicle slide over obstacles. Many double as a step — flat sliders and step-edition models give you both function and protection in one piece. If you're ever going off road — even gravel forest roads — rock sliders are the replacement for factory running boards. They deliver the step you need with the protection running boards can't provide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are rock sliders and do I need them?
Rock sliders are heavy-duty steel or aluminum bars that mount to your vehicle's frame to protect the rocker panels from trail damage. Your rocker panels are the lowest, most exposed body panels between the front and rear wheels — and they're one of the most costly areas to repair. If you drive off road at all — even maintained forest roads with occasional rocks or ruts — rock sliders are a smart investment. They also serve as a step for lifted vehicles and a jacking point for recovery. For serious off roading and rock crawling, rock sliders are essential.
Should I get bolt-on or weld-on rock sliders?
Bolt-on rock sliders are ideal for most overlanders and off-roaders. They install in 2–3 hours with basic hand tools, require no vehicle modification, and can be removed if needed — making them perfect for leased vehicles. Weld-on sliders provide ultimate structural strength for extreme rock crawling where maximum rigidity matters. If you're doing serious technical trail work and want zero flex at the mounting points, weld-on is the way to go. For everything else — trail running, overlanding, daily driving — bolt-on sliders from RCI, Cali Raised, and CBI are more than strong enough.
What's the difference between 5-degree and 20-degree rock sliders?
The degree refers to the angle of the slider relative to horizontal. A 20-degree slider (like the RCI 20°) angles up closer to the body, giving you more ground clearance — better for rock crawling and technical trails. A 5-degree slider sits nearly flat, functioning better as a step while still protecting the rocker panel. Flat sliders are positioned parallel to the ground, doubling as a convenient step for daily use. Choose 20-degree for maximum clearance on the trail. Choose 5-degree or flat for a balance of protection and step function.
What are the best rock sliders for a Tacoma?
The best tacoma rock sliders depend on your generation and use case. For 3rd gen tacoma rock sliders (2016–2023), the RCI 20-degree ($805) is the most popular choice — USA-made DOM tubing, full frame support plate, bolt-on. The Cali Raised Trail Edition ($1,014) adds a cleaner aesthetic with custom weld fixtures and kickout options. For 4th gen tacoma rock sliders (2024+), the Backwoods Adventure Mods sliders ($1,399) are designed for the new platform. For 1st gen tacoma rock sliders (2005–2015), the RCI 5-degree fits perfectly. All are bolt-on with no vehicle modification needed.
What are the best rock sliders for a 4Runner?
For 5th gen 4runner rock sliders (2010–2024), we carry RCI, Cali Raised Trail Edition (best bolt-on with kickout), and CBI (premium build). For 3rd gen 4runner rock sliders and 4th gen 4runner rock sliders, RCI and Cali Raised both offer fitments. For 2025 4runner rock sliders on the new 6th gen platform, Cali Raised offers both Trail Edition and Step Edition options ($889). The rci rock sliders 4runner models are the most affordable; the cali raised rock sliders offer the most style options.
Can I use rock sliders as a step?
Yes. Many rock sliders serve as a functional side step for lifted vehicles. Flat sliders and step-edition models (like the Cali Raised Step Edition) include a filler plate that creates a flat surface for your foot. Even angled sliders work as a step — the tube itself is wide enough to stand on. If step function is your priority, choose flat or step-edition sliders. If ground clearance matters more, choose angled sliders and use removable steps for rock sliders that clip onto the tube when you need them at camp.
How long does it take to install rock sliders?
Bolt-on rock sliders typically take 2–3 hours to install with basic hand tools — wrenches, sockets, and a torque wrench. No drilling, no welding, no vehicle modification. Most products come with all required hardware and detailed instructions. Weld-on sliders require welding equipment and take longer depending on your fabrication experience. For bolt-on installs, we recommend doing it on a flat surface with a friend to help hold the slider in position while you start the bolts.
Do you have rock sliders for Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator?
We currently carry rock sliders primarily for Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Lexus, and Subaru vehicles.
