Getting at gear on a loaded roof rack usually involves one foot on a tyre, one hand on something that was never meant to be grabbed, and a bit of hope. Door frames, rack edges, and tent ladders all get used as handholds because there is nothing better there. This grab handle gives you something that actually is.
This roof rack grab handle bolts to either the left or right side of your Slimline 3 rack, giving you a solid hold while you reach up for a tent, an awning, a cargo box or whatever is on top. It is made from black powder-coated 3CR12 stainless steel, weighs 1.46 lbs, and comes with stainless installation hardware and a fitment guide.
Why You Want One
Roof racks sit high, and they sit higher once the vehicle is lifted. Reaching gear on top means getting some of your weight off the ground, and what you hold onto while doing it matters.
Wet and Muddy Hands
A painted door frame is slippery when wet. A purpose-built handle is something you can actually grip with cold, wet hands.
Reaching Across the Tray
Pulling an awning bag or a cargo box toward you takes leverage, and leverage needs a fixed point to pull against.
Your Paintwork
Every grab at a door frame or a rack edge is another scuff. A handle takes the wear instead of your vehicle.
What It Is, and What It Is Not
Worth being straight about this. A roof rack grab handle is an assist, not a step and not a ladder. It gives you a secure hold while you steady yourself and reach, which is genuinely what most people need most of the time.
Dometic does not publish a load rating for it, so do not treat it as something to hang your full body weight from or climb on. If you need to get fully up onto the roof regularly, a proper ladder is the answer and the handle complements it rather than replacing it.
Used as intended, it is one of those small parts you stop noticing because it is always there when you reach for it.
Left Side, Right Side, or Both
The roof rack handle mounts along either the left or the right side of the Slimline 3, so you can put it wherever you actually load from.
For most people that is the kerb side, since that is where you stand when parked. If you run a rooftop tent that opens to one side and an awning on the other, you will probably want the handle on the tent side, since that is where the climbing and reaching happens. Plenty of owners fit two, one per side, given what a single handle costs relative to the rest of the build.
The kit includes a top bracket and a bottom bracket, and it bolts up with the supplied stainless hardware using the fitment guide.
Built From the Right Material
This is a part you grab with wet hands after it has sat out in the weather for a year, so the material matters more than it does on something decorative.
It is 3CR12 stainless steel with a black powder coat, the same material and finish used across the Front Runner rack range. It resists corrosion where it will see salt and water, and it matches your rack rather than looking like an aftermarket add-on bolted to the side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stand on it or use it as a step?
No. It is designed to assist in accessing gear on top of the rack, giving you a secure hold while you steady yourself and reach. Dometic does not publish a load rating for it, so do not treat it as a step or hang your full weight from it. If you regularly need to get fully onto the roof, use a proper ladder and let the handle do what it is for.
Which side should I mount it on?
It fits either the left or the right side of the Slimline 3. Most people put it on the side they load from, usually the kerb side. If you run a rooftop tent that opens to one side, the tent side is often the better call, since that is where the reaching happens. Plenty of owners simply fit one on each side.
Do I get two handles in the kit?
One. The kit contains a top bracket and a bottom bracket for a single grab handle, plus the stainless hardware and fitting instructions. If you want one on each side of the rack, you need two kits.
Will it clash with my other rack accessories?
It mounts to the side of the rack, which is also where awning brackets, recovery board mounts and shovel mounts tend to live. On a busy rack it is worth planning the positions together rather than one at a time. Call us at 844-200-3979 with what you are already running and we will work out where the handle goes.
Does it fit a Slimline II rack?
This handle is built for the Slimline 3 and Dometic specifies it for that rack. The Slimline 3 uses a redesigned side profile, so do not assume it carries over to an older Slimline II. Call us at 844-200-3979 with your rack and we will confirm before you order rather than after.
