Why the Rear Hatch Matters
This is the whole reason to choose a 180 degree awning over a wraparound. A 270 covers your rear corner, which is great until you need the hatch open, a bike rack swung out, a rear-mounted spare accessed, or a tailgate tent deployed. Then the awning arm is in the way.
The 180 runs the full length of the vehicle side and stops there. Your back door opens fully. Your rear-mounted gear stays reachable. If you run a drawer system, a fridge slide, or a rear kitchen, you keep all of it working while still having a large covered area alongside the rig.
Here is the part people miss: the 180 actually covers more area than the 270, at 90.4 square feet versus 80.7. A wraparound spends some of its arc turning the corner. A straight side awning puts all of it along the flank, where you are setting up chairs and a table. More usable shade, and the hatch still works.

Mounting and Rooftop Tent Pairing
Choose driver side or passenger side at checkout. Universal brackets are included and the mounting backplate uses 2 inch spacing track-to-track. As a roof rack awning it mounts to your rack rail rather than the vehicle body, so nothing gets drilled.

Why does the 180 cover more than the 270?
Because none of its arc is spent turning the corner. The 180 runs a full semicircular arc along the vehicle side at 90.4 square feet. The 270 covers 80.7 square feet but splits that between the side and the rear wrap. If your priority is the largest covered area alongside the rig for chairs, a table, and a cooking setup, the 180 gives you more of it. If you want the tailgate sheltered, the 270 trades some side coverage for that.
Will my rear hatch still open?
Yes, completely. That is the defining feature of this awning. The canopy extends along the vehicle side and stops, so the rear stays clear. Your hatch opens fully, a swing-out bike rack or spare tire carrier still works, and a rear drawer or fridge slide stays reachable. For SUV and hatchback builds where rear access is how you live out of the vehicle, this matters more than wrapping the corner.
Does it really need no poles?
In calm conditions, no. The rigid arms carry the whole canopy, so you swing it out, lock it, and you are done. Telescoping aluminum support poles, guy lines, and stakes are all included, and FSR recommends using them in any degree of wind or when running awning walls. Driver side or passenger side?
You choose at purchase. Most people mount passenger side so camp sets up away from traffic when parked roadside and the driver door stays clear.
