Tepui Tents

When you are new to overlanding and looking for your first rooftop tent to purchase, the chance of coming across a Thule Tepui is relatively high. You may already have read their brand name on outdoor adventure blogs, or Tepui might get many recommendations from its loyal consumers. But who exactly are they, and why are they often associated with rooftop tents and other off-road stuff?

    History Of Tepui Tents

Tepui Tents was founded in 2010 by its founder and outdoor enthusiast, Evan, who noticed that many people were camping on top of their cars in Venezuela to avoid the hassle of sleeping on the ground. After experiencing the traditional camping lifestyle, he decided it was time to develop something different and bring it to the United States - an accommodation that would bring comfort and convenience while enjoying outdoor adventures.

Tepui, an indigenous Venezuelan term for a tabletop mountain, became the perfect name for their brand. Tepui Tents has since then become one of the leading brands that provide off-road adventurers with durable rooftop tents and other camping accessories to make their journey even more comfortable and enjoyable.

Having its headquarters in Santa Cruz, California, Tepui Tents has corresponded to every demand from the American market. Tepui Tents have become a household name in the overlanding and outdoor industry by making high-quality and reliable RTTs. Tepui Tents is highly recognized for its innovative designs suitable for all types of terrains and its superior durability, comfort, and convenience performance.

In December 2018, Swedish Giant and rack-maker Thule acquired Tepui Tents and established their partnership to create the most advanced and innovative Tepui rooftop tent collection. Tepui tents are now partnered with Thule’s knowledge and expertise, offering the highest quality and performance that any outdoor enthusiast could ever dream of.

    Tepui Tents Awning

    tepui tents awning open view

After being acquired by Thule, the traditional Tepui Tents awnings became Thule awnings, that's no surprise to anybody, especially after reading this in depth guide. The good thing, is that from the partnership emerged great innovation. Tepui had very high quality side awnings, well now you get more options and the Outland Awning is perhaps the most versatile one.

It comes in three different sizes, or better, lengths, which makes it easy to mount on pretty much any vehicle given the shortest length is of just 6.2 feet. Add to that the fact that this awning can be mounted onto any Thule rack or crossbar, as well as other rack systems, and it's a universal awning.

Also, it has a hard case or hard exterior cover, making it not only much more durable against the elements such as dust, sand or even sun, but it's better protected against dents or scratches. Plus, it comes with all the accessories you need, such as telescoping legs to easily open it and set it up no matter what the height of your rack or vehicle is. An awning is a great addition to a Tepui roof top tent in order to have a full camping setup.

    Tepui Insulator For Rooftop Tents

    tepui insulator for rooftop tent

Another excellent Tepui roof top tent accessory: an insulator. Why? Simple, insulators will help keep you warmer during the colder months, there is no secret around it. Despite the insulator maybe not being enough if you camp in really cold areas, where we recommend adding a portable heater or special bedding, the Tepui insulator for rooftop tents adds an additional layer of protection against the cold.

Installation is quite simple, as it's very intuitive and it attaches to the inner frame of your Thule Tepui roof top tent. They come in different sizes, to be fitted to the different tents, so when you are going to buy one, make sure you are purchasing the right size for the right model you own.

Pro tip: When you are not going to use them, such as in spring or summer, make sure to store them in a very dry place, where they won't be getting any mold or mildew. Remember that the condensation you can get during colder months, can create humidity and the insulator could get a bit wet, dry it out before storing it.

    Tepui Tents FAQs

    Did Thule buy Tepui?

On December 18, 2018, the Swedish off-road giant Thule acquired the rights to the Santa Cruz based rooftop tent company Tepui. This partnership paved great opportunities for both companies, as they have complemented each other. Thule specializes mostly in manufacturing roof racks and other overlanding equipment, sharing their expertise and vast knowledge with Tepui Tents.

What is the difference between ruggedized and explorer series tents?

The ruggedized series of Tepui tents consist of a much denser fabric and more durable material composition. Tepui Tents tagged as ruggedized are suitable for heavy-duty usage and are recommended for extreme off-road conditions. Meanwhile, the explorer series Tepui tents are generally lighter and ideal for those off-road enthusiasts with plenty of accessories to bring.

What is the difference between the Thule Basin and Basin Wedge?

The main difference between these two hardshell tents is their orientation relative to their setup. Basin Wedge has a south-facing opening, while Thule Basin is a pop-up hardshell tent. Besides their opening mechanism and orientation, Thule Basin Wedge has a higher headroom than the Thule Basin pop up hard tent.

Can I install Tepui Tents on any car?

Yes, any available Tepui rooftop tents can be installed on any vehicle, provided there’s an existing crossbar mounted on your off-road ride. The next thing to consider will be your vehicle’s load rating or weight capacity. You may check your manufacturer’s user guide to understand the total allowable load that your vehicle can handle for safe driving conditions.

    Are Tepui tents waterproof?

Yes, all Tepui roof top tent models are waterproof. Both the canvas and the rainfly or shells of the tents are waterproof. However, one must understand that if there is heavy rain, and the windows of the tent are open, or the rainfly isn't properly installed, water could get in. Just make sure to properly close the RTT when it rains.
