Not a Clamshell. Not a Pop-Up. Both.
23Zero Kabari Z. 2-person Z-lift rooftop tent. 58" headroom. 360-degree views. 4-season rated.
The 23Zero Kabari Z is a new category of rooftop tent. Its revolutionary Z-lift mechanism uses a multi-hinge, gas-assisted system that lets the tent function as a traditional low-angle clamshell or fully deploy into a Z-lift configuration with 58 inches of headroom, 360-degree views, and four-way access. No other hardshell rooftop tent on the market does both. Developed collaboratively by 23Zero Australia and 23Zero USA, the Kabari Z is purpose-built for overlanders who want more internal space, greater headroom, and true versatility in demanding environments.
The laser-welded 2mm aluminum shell sits on an aluminum honeycomb base with PVDF anti-oxidation coating that supports over 1,000 lbs of static load. ECO13B fabric with Light Suppression Technology (LST) blocks heat and sunlight. A self-inflating mattress with 10mm insulated underlay handles condensation and temperature management. Integrated power hub with USB-A, USB-C, 12V outlet, and external Anderson SB-50 plug. This is not just a roof tent. It is a fully engineered off-grid sleeping system.

The Z-Lift: Two Tents in One
The Z-lift deployment system is what makes the Kabari Z unlike anything else. Three main hinges and gas-assisted struts allow you to open the tent in two configurations: a low-angle clamshell for quick stops or bad weather, or a full Z-lift for maximum headroom and access. In Z-lift mode, you get 58 inches of interior height, genuine 360-degree views through oversized windows and doors, and four-way entry from the front, rear, and both sides. The gas struts make deployment fast and effortless. When you are done, the tent folds back into a low-profile, aerodynamic shape that is just 9.5 inches tall on your rack.

Comfort That Goes Off-Grid
The self-inflating mattress (2.4 inches thick) lets you fine-tune firmness to your preference through the built-in valve. Beneath it, a 10mm insulated underlay manages condensation and heat loss from the aluminum base. ECO13B fabric with Light Suppression Technology (LST) keeps the sleeping area darker and cooler by blocking heat and sunlight penetration. A dimmable LED light bar with white and amber modes provides interior illumination without the need for headlamps. The built-in power hub features a voltage meter, USB-A, USB-C, and 12V outlets for charging devices, running accessories, or powering a fan. An externally mounted Anderson SB-50 plug underneath the tent connects to your vehicle's electrical system or a portable power station. Bedding stores inside when the tent is closed.

Laser-Welded Aluminum Construction
The shell is constructed from 2mm laser-welded aluminum with smooth radius corners that reduce stress fatigue points and improve long-term durability. The base uses an aluminum honeycomb structure with PVDF anti-oxidation coating that delivers over 1,000 lbs of static load capacity. Smooth radius corners instead of sharp bends mean fewer weak points where cracks could form over years of off-road use. Despite the heavy-duty construction, the closed profile remains aerodynamic and low to minimize wind drag on the highway. This is a tent shell built like structural aerospace panel, not stamped sheet metal.
More Features That Matter
All-Weather Ventilation: Oversized entry awnings over each door keep rain out while the doors are open. Triangular mesh windows (32" W x 17" L) on the sides, a moon roof (32" W x 36" L), and 125 gsm insect screens across every opening provide excellent airflow while keeping bugs and weather out. You can leave multiple openings unzipped for cross-ventilation without compromising insect protection.
Cooler and Heater Ports: Two 5-inch diameter ports with zippered wiring access points let you run a heater duct, AC hose, or electrical cable into the tent without leaving a door or window open. Purpose-built for cold weather camping and extended off-grid stays.
Four-Way Access: Doors on the front (32" W x 36" L), rear (23" W x 28" L), and both sides (48" W x 36" L) let you enter and exit from any direction. This is useful for positioning the tent entry based on wind direction, camp layout, or ladder placement. Note: the front door does not come with preinstalled ladder mounts.
Included Crossbars: Two roof crossbars (2" x 51" x 0.50") are included for mounting gear, a solar panel, or accessories on top of the closed tent shell. Most competitors charge extra for crossbars.
Storage Inside: Two side storage pockets (approximately 9" W x 5" L), a three-pocket gear loft (39" W x 12" L) with a clear tablet section (13" x 9") and two side gear pockets. A shoe bag (18.75" W x 19" L) and a gear storage bag (16" W x 22" L) with four mesh pockets are also included.

What's Included
Preinstalled: Six (6) ladder/bag brackets, keder track for shoe and gear bags, ten (10) closing latches, three (3) main hinges, and one hanger for the upper roof.

Before You Install
Verify your vehicle's maximum roof load capacity as specified by the manufacturer. Check the load limit of your roof rack or truck bed rack, especially for off-road use. At 204 lbs mounting weight, you need a rack with a dynamic load rating of at least 204 lbs. The closed footprint is 55.25" W x 86.625" L, so confirm your rack dimensions can accommodate it. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will verify compatibility before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Z-lift mechanism?
The Z-lift is a multi-hinge, gas-assisted opening system with three main hinges that allows the tent to open in two ways. In clamshell mode, the top lifts at a low angle like a traditional clamshell tent, ideal for quick stops or high wind conditions. In full Z-lift mode, the top rises higher using the Z-shaped hinge path, providing 58 inches of interior height, 360-degree views through windows and doors on all four sides, and entry/exit from any direction. No other hardshell rooftop tent offers both configurations in one tent.
What rack do I need for the Kabari Z?
You need a roof rack, bed rack, or crossbar system with a dynamic load rating of at least 204 lbs. The closed footprint is 55.25" W x 86.625" L. It works with racks from Prinsu, Front Runner, Thule, Yakima, Rhino-Rack, and other brands that can handle the weight. Due to the 204 lb weight, factory crossbars on most vehicles will not be sufficient. You will need aftermarket racks rated for this load. Call us at 844-200-3979 to confirm compatibility.
Does the Kabari Z have a built-in power system?
Yes. The tent has a built-in power hub inside with a voltage meter, USB-A port, USB-C port, and 12V outlet. The hub is powered through an externally mounted Anderson SB-50 plug located underneath the tent. You connect this to your vehicle's auxiliary power system or a portable power station using your own cable (the power source and connecting cable to the SB-50 plug are not included). This setup lets you charge devices, run a fan, or power accessories without running cords through a window.
Can I store bedding inside when the tent is closed?
Yes. The tent is designed with space to store bedding when closed. The self-inflating mattress deflates through the valve, and sheets, pillows, and a light sleeping bag can be left inside. The ten closing latches secure the shell tightly. Internal storage pockets (side pockets, gear loft) also hold small items while the tent is stowed for transit.
Is the Kabari Z good for cold weather?
Yes. The Kabari Z is 4-season rated. ECO13B fabric with LST provides insulation and blocks heat/light. The 10mm insulated underlay beneath the mattress manages condensation and heat loss from the aluminum base. Two 5-inch cooler/heater ports with zippered wiring access let you run a heater duct into the tent. The aluminum honeycomb base and 2mm laser-welded shell provide structural protection against wind, rain, and snow loads. Pair with a sleeping bag rated for your expected temperatures.
