This 4Runner roof rack spans 63.5 inches with 5 extrusion crossbars and carries 200 lbs dynamic and 500 lbs static, at roughly 35 lbs. That is the same adventure-proven rack Sherpa builds full length, made smaller for people who need less. Construction is 1/4 inch aircraft-grade aluminum side panels with stainless steel hardware. Modular mounting options and a wide accessory range make it easy to secure gear. Installation is completely drill-free. Why a Half Roof Rack?
A half roof rack is not a compromise so much as a different answer. A full-length rack is right when you need the whole roof, and plenty of people do not.
Less Weight Up High
About 35 lbs versus 50 for the full-length Crestone. On a tall SUV, weight on the roof is felt more than weight anywhere else.
Less Wind Noise
A shorter rack presents less to the airstream. Combined with the fairing, that keeps highway noise down on a daily driver.
Rear Hatch Clear
The half length leaves the back of the roof open, which suits anyone who wants the rear of the vehicle uncluttered.
The trade is platform. Sixty-three and a half inches takes a cargo box, boards, an awning, and recovery gear comfortably, but it is not the rack for a rooftop tent or a roof packed end to end.

Worth noticing: the Needle carries more than the full-length Crestone Sport despite being shorter, at 200 lbs dynamic against 150. Length and capacity are not the same thing.
Choose the Needle if you want a cargo platform without covering the whole roof. Choose the Crestone Sport if you want full length at the lowest profile. Choose the PEAK Crestone if a rooftop tent is in the plan.

Why does it carry more than the full-length Sport?
Because length and capacity are set by different things. The Needle uses the same 1/4 inch aircraft-grade aluminum side plates as the full-length PEAK racks, just shorter. The Crestone Sport is full length but uses lighter, thinner side plates. So the Needle rates 200 lbs dynamic against the Sport's 150, despite being a third shorter.
Does installation require drilling?
No. The Needle is drill-free and requires zero modification, mounting to factory locations with four brackets. All required hardware is included. Nothing permanent happens to the vehicle, which matters on a 4Runner that holds its resale value as well as these do.
What can I carry on it?
Within the 200 lb dynamic rating, plenty. A cargo box, kayaks, skis, bikes, traction boards, a shovel, fuel cans, or an awning down one side. Five crossbars slide to whatever spacing your gear needs, and the side plates take straps directly for anything that does not bolt down. As a 4Runner cargo rack it covers most of what people actually carry week to week.
Which fairing should I choose?
Choose Full Height if you are not running a light bar, since it deflects the most air for the quietest ride. Choose Half Height if you want a single-row light bar to sit flush with the fairing line.
