Ladder Rack

    Ladder Rack Review

A ladder rack may seem to serve a simple purpose: transporting a ladder on your vehicle. However, they can do more, a lot more. A good ladder rack can be a game changer for your vehicle, from allowing you to safely carry more than one ladder, to turning your vehicle into a proper working business truck. You see, a good ladder rack upgrades your ride completely. And what seemed like a basic even goofy add-on, can instead be an attractive unit that enhances your vehicle’s cargo carrying capacity as well as its functionality.

Sure, the ladder rack still needs to fulfil the goal of carrying a ladder without damaging your car’s roof paint, it also needs to be easy to access the ladder to mount it, secure it and unmount it quickly. However, if you get the proper ladder rack you will have space to transport other gear, mount boxes, make room inside your vehicle or in the truck’s bed for more cargo, machinery, you name it. That’s why in this guide we’ll go over the best ladder rack systems possible, so you learn about the different types, which one suits your needs and are able to buy the one that is truly an investment and an improvement.

These aren’t the only racks we have, they’re the ones we recommend. You can find the rest by browsing this collection. You will also notice we recommend one specific model that maybe fits one vehicle, for example a Leitner ACS for a Ford truck, but remember there’s the same exact system (Leitner ACS) for other brands and models too. Leitner Ladder Rack For Toyota Tacoma

leitner ladder rack for toyota tacoma

The Leitner Active Cargo System is the best truck bed rack system in the world. By consequence, it also means it can be viewed as one of the top ladder rack options for any pick up truck, especially for a Toyota Tacoma. Now, it’s not exactly affordable, and the reason is that this is much more than just a ladder rack, it’s the whole thing. It can carry ladders, as well as all your gear safely attached to the sides of the rack, all whilst leaving space in your bed to transport even more things.

Made in USA with premium aluminum, this ladder rack weighs only 85 lbs, being a lightweight unit that doesn’t add any unnecessary stress on your Tacoma. On top of that, it’s forged, meaning there are no bolts and screws rattling around when you drive. It even has an impressive 1,400 lbs of static weight capacity, which literally means you can mount whatever you can imagine over it and it’ll hold. Think of carrying ladders, logs, wood, or other heavy-duty materials. The ACS can handle it.

Now, onto the good stuff. This ladder rack is much more than just a simply system. The Leitner ACS was designed to add as many accessories as you can imagine. Outfit it with extra Gear Pods, Shower Pods, RotoPax mounts, so on and so forth, and what you get is a working bed rack to mount ladders, carry all the gear safely and securely in the pods, and then turn your vehicle into an overlanding ride during weekends to explore unbeaten paths. Oh, and did we mention it works with Decked systems? Well it does, which means suddenly your Tacoma can be the perfect work truck.

    Pros:

    • 1400 lbs static load rating
    • Perfect to carry as many accessories and gear as you can imagine
    • Works with Decked systems

    Thule Ladder Rack

    Thule Ladder Rack

Thule has been regarded for years as one of the leading, if not the leader, in ladder racks and working rack systems. Their bed racks are affordable, well built and with a smart design. The Tracrac SR is just that: a universal ladder rack fitting most trucks in the market that requires no drilling to be installed.

The Thule ladder rack also has a sliding channel or slot at the bottom of the rack, which allows you to slide the two rack towers to accommodate different size of cargo. Imagine you need to transport a longer or shorter ladder, well problem solved, just slide the towers forwards or backwards to better secure the ladder(s). Then, the rack has an impressive static load rating of 1250 lbs, so whatever you throw on top of it, it’ll be able to carry it.

As you may have imagined, being Thule it works with all their accessories. You get numerous rack accessories to safely tie down ladders, kayaks, boards, materials, and such. You get options to even mount roof top tents if that’s something that you think you’d like to do as a hobby when you’re not working. All in all, this is a flexible and adaptable system.

    Pros:

    • 1250 lbs static load rating
    • Universal bed rack
    • No drilling required to install it
    • Rack towers slide front to back to allow a safer ladder transportation

    Cons:

    OVS Ladder Rack Heavy Duty

    OVS Ladder Rack Heavy Duty

If your job requires transporting really heavy cargo on top of just ladders, then you know you want a heavy duty rack, and the OVS Discovery is the perfect fit. It’s a universal truck bed rack with an unbelievable 1350 lbs of load rating, which has an easy installation, and multiple tie down options on the sides thanks to side panels, and on the top thanks to extra crossbars. Essentially, it’s stable, strong, and lets you carry more than other racks.

Now, the catch is this bed rack works only with short bed trucks, such the Tacoma, Colorado or Frontier, since it’s a smaller unit. Installation is drill free, so removing it leaves no marks on your bed. Sitting at 33” tall, this ladder rack lets you have the ladders over it, with the overhang over the cab without risking to chip or scratch the top of your cab.

Lets talk about the side panels. Thanks to them the rack gains stability and sturdiness, as the panels help secure together the front and back towers, so it won’t wobble or dance with the vibrations of the road. Also, these side panels mean you can tie to them anything, from water tanks, to recovery gear, straps, RotoPax, and even shovel, axe or other tool mounts. Then you get 3 crossbars on top to carry all lengths of ladders, as well as the front to back crossbars which are narrower than the feet, creating a really strong and table rack top.

    Pros:

    • 1350 lbs load rating
    • 3 crossbars on top for more safety
    • Side panels to carry more gear
    • Drill free installation

    Cons:

    • Works only on short bed trucks

RCI Removable Ladder Racks For Trucks

rci removable ladder rack for trucks

The specific rack we’re reviewing here is for Ford trucks, however, it’s universal. What does that mean? It means the same exact bed rack fits on multiple trucks, what might change are the feet or mounting options, but essentially the rack remains the same. Therefore, we thought it was the perfect model for this section.

The RCI 18” bed rack is very, very easy to install, essentially universal, and quite easy to remove. It requires no drilling onto your bed if you choose to go with the C-clamps, which make the act of removing the rack itself quite fast and simple. It might be a bit heavy or large to remove it on your own, but with the help of someone else, just loosen the c-clamps, and voilà.

That said, as to the rack itself, it’s made in USA, directly in Colorado. It has a 700 lbs load rating, which is enough for materials, ladder and gear, as well as for overlanding purposes. The side panels are perfect to attach shovels, axes, and other power tools. It’s quite sturdy and stable, and has an 18” clearance form the bed of the truck, giving you space to mount other things onto your bed. A very flexible bed rack that can be used for many different purposes and on many different vehicles.

    Pros:

    • 700 lbs load rating
    • Universal, mounts on most trucks
    • Made in USA
    • Side panels to easily install more gear

    Cons:

    • Requires the c-clamp mounting option to easily remove it

Eezi Awn Ladder Rack For Trailer

eezi awn ladder rack for trailer

Finding a ladder rack for a trailer can be a bit of a tougher decision, as you have plenty of options. Depending on the type and height of trailer you have, you can get a higher bed rack such as the Thule Trac Rac, or a lower system such as platform rack or even two crossbars. In our opinion, of you’re already carrying an unstable item such as ladders, which can move around easily if not tied properly, keeping a lower center of gravity can be better. Therefore, we recommend a set of crossbars or a platform rack. In this case, we like the Eezi-Awn K9 roof rack which normally is sold fur truck shells, but works fine on most trailers with a flat top.

This rack includes two mounting rails that attach to any flat surface, and then a set of feet (and you can choose amongst different heights), that bolt onto the rails. You can also select the length and width of the platform to better fit your trailer’s flat surface. Hence why we recommend this rack, it comes in different sizes and heights, being flexible enough to suit your needs.

Installing it isn’t that hard, as matter of fact you might not need to drill, although sometimes you might, this depends on your trailer. That said, as a rack it has over 1,000 lbs in load rating (but much will depend on your trailer’s strength), and it’s compatible with Yakima and Thule accessories so when it’s not used to transport contractor tools and gear, it can be used for bikes, tents and more.

    Pros:

    • Comes in different heights and lengths
    • Easy to install
    • Universal
    • Works with accessories and add-ons from Thule and Yakima

    Cons:

    • Depending on your trailer, installing it might mean drilling

    Ladder Rack With Tonneau Cover

This section covers exclusively ladder racks that work with tonneau covers. We will cover the two best models, but we have a few more that work with bed covers too. If you find these two aren't what you need, contact us, we'll recommend others.

    ACS Tonneau

Leitner Designs Ladder Rack with Tonneau Cover For Ford

Our favorite: the Leitner ACS Tonneau. We have covered the Leitner ACS before in this review, we consider it the best and toughest bed rack in the world. The ACS Tonneau is the system that allows you to also keep a tonneau cover in place. All tonneau covers? No, tri fold covers won’t work, but most retractable ones will, even the electric ones.

The ACS allows you to use it over different trucks, from Ford, to Toyota, to Jeep, RAM, etc, just search for the one for your brand. On top of that, it has a lead rating of 600 lbs, still solid enough to transport ladders, gear and other contractor tools. It’s very light weighing just 85 lbs, made of forged aluminum without any screws or bolts rattling when you’re driving, or loosening with time. It’s safe, strong, and looks great.

On top of all that, you can add the Gear Pods to the sides of the rack, which let you store other gear and power tools in a safe, dry and even lockable box. All of this without compromising the space inside your bed, which remains covered thanks to the tonneau cover. The best of all worlds.

    Pros:

    • Allows you to keep tonneau covers
    • Made in USA form forged aluminum
    • Has multiple rack accessories that make it perfect to transport more gear

    Cons:

    EGR Universal Rack

    egr universal rack

We wanted to cover another ladder rack that works with tonneau covers, and what better than a bed rack made by a company that also manufactures tonneau covers? The EGR RollTrac Universal Bed Rack is the perfect contractor bed rack. It fits almost all trucks, even longer bed trucks. The weight rating is 500 lbs, which isn’t as much as other overlanding racks, but it fits the purpose of transporting racks, wood, and other materials safely enough.

It also has two side bars which keep the rack sturdy and stable and help as tie down points or to transport power tools, shovels, axes, and even water tanks. You can also adjust the height and width of the rack depending on your truck’s size and your own needs. It enables you to carry ladders over the cab or lowering the rack to carry smaller items without having any wind resistance.

Finally, it accommodates any EGR Rolltrac tonneau cover. Therefore, you have what you want: a ladder rack with the option of keeping your bed protected with a cover, with items being transported inside of it completely dry, safe, and invisible from curious eyes.

    Pros:

    • Allows you to keep EGR RollTrac tonneau covers
    • Adjustable height
    • Side bars allow mounting power tools and more gear
    • Very fair price

    Ladder Rack For Truck Cap

Truck bed caps are very common amongst contractors and even overlanders. They allow your truck bed to be covered and protected from the elements, as well as adding privacy. Best of it all, you can ad a truck cap rack, and as such use it as a ladder rack. Let's take a look at two of the best choices for such use.

    RSI Roller Rack

    rsi roller rack

This truck bed cap rack was designed exclusively for the RSI SmartCap models, yet it’s one of the smartest cap racks you will ever find, and we highly recommend you getting one if you own a SmartCap whether you use it for ladders or not. Let’s look at why.

Not only is the rack incredibly strong with a 770 lbs static load rating, which basically ensures you can transport not just ladders but contractor gear on it safely, but the rack is also carefully powder coated to protect against corrosion and comes with a 3-year warranty.

You may wonder, yeah but that’s common on most racks. Well, what’s not exactly common are the rolling features of the rack. This truck cap rack includes a roller at the rear end of the rack, so whenever you mount a ladder, a wooden board, or other long items, you can roll them from the back towards the front with the aid of the rack. Effortless and smart mounting. Add to that the fact that the rack includes three sets of straps on the sides, with the corresponding securing ends on the other side, and you got yourself the perfect ladder rack. Yes, this is the perfect ladder rack.

    Pros:

    • Specifically designed to transport ladders and longer items.
    • Includes a roller at the rear end to easily mount any item onto the rack.
    • Includes 3 straps on the side to safely secure what you carry.
    • 770 lbs load rating

    Cons:

    • Works only on RSI SmartCap caps

    Front Runner Cap Rack

    front runner cap rack

This Front Runner is a universal cap rack, which includes the necessary tracks so you can mount it over any canopy and even flat trailer. It also comes in different sizes in case your cap is longer or shorter. The fasteners supplied make it easy and adaptable to install on different cap models.

As with all Front Runner racks, you get a lot of perks coming from the aftermarket rack accessories available. We have a full section dedicated to ladder rack accessories below, and most of them are from Front Runner. The ones you can get for ladders are the cargo roller (to easily roll your ladder from the back to the front or slide it our form the rack), the rack pads to keep the ladder from scratching the rack, and the Stratchits which are essentially straps. Ideal.

The rack comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty which proves durability. As to strength, well, if 660 lbs aren’t enough to convince you, we’re not sure what will. Remember, this is a tough and well built cap ladder rack, which also works on trailers.

    Pros:

    • 660 lbs load rating
    • Universal, mounts on multiple cap models and even trailers
    • Limited Lifetime Warranty
    • Available in different dimensions

    Ladder Roof Rack

As to this section, much like the one above, we are going to focus on some of the SUV ladder racks we have available. We can openly say, almost all roof racks or crossbars can safely carry a ladder if properly secured to the rack, but this section highlights some of the most popular and easy to use roof racks for ladders on SUVs.

    Prinsu 4Runner Roof Rack

    prinsu 4runner ladder rack

A ladder roof rack is quite different to the other models we’re reviewing, simply because it’s an actual roof rack for SUVs (or maybe even trucks), on which you can carry a ladder. Almost any roof rack or crossbar system can be a ladder roof rack, but we prefer platform roof racks as they are safer, have a higher carrying capacity, protect your vehicle’s roof more, and allow for more tie down points.

Amongst the brands we carry, we recommend the Prinsu roof rack. If you own a 4Runner, which is the model we are reviewing here, we highly recommend the Prinsu for quite a few reasons. The first being this roof rack can be installed on your own in less than one hour. It’s modular, meaning there are no bulky parts to move around, you can literally install one part at a time. On top of that, it requires no drilling and bolts directly onto the roof’s mounting points. Finally, it has a static load rating of 1,000 lbs.

Mounting ladders will be a breeze, given it has numerous tie down points on all sides of the slats (cross bars of the rack), so there’s nothing safer for your car. Being a longer platform rack, there is a larger surface over which the ladder sits and doesn’t move or dance around as much. Plus, you have more room for other gear on top of the rack too, you get the point.

    Pros:

    • Full roof rack with more room to carry other gear
    • Made in USA
    • 1,000 lbs load rating
    • No drilling required to install it

    Cons:

    • There are more affordable ladder roof rack options, but less adaptable

Front Runner Roof Rack For Lexus GX460

Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack For Lexus GX460

Another great roof rack option we like to recommend is Front Runner Slimline II roof racks. The main reason is how solid, strong and well built they are. These are made in South Africa, directly at the headquarters of Front Runner which oir team from Off Road Tents have visited in numerous occasions. The materials used, the manufacturing process and quality control are unbeatable. Meaning, you get a solid ladder roof rack and much more.

Add to that the fact that they have roof racks for pretty much any SUV you can imagine. 4Runner? Yes. Ford Explorer? Yes. GX460? Yes. All you have to do is type the name of your vehicle and the words “Front Runner” in the search bar and it’ll pop-up.

Finally, these racks have a 660 lbs load rating, which is enough for any gear. Add to that the over 100 roof rack accessories to tie down ladders, boards, add boxes, cargo options, etc. That makes it easy and simple to take with you what you need for your job, day-to-day life or hobbies.

    Pros:

    • Made in South Africa under excellent manufacturing processes

    Ladder Rack Van

    ladder rack van

Sprinter vans, Ford Transit and other vans are amongst the most common and preferred work vehicles in America. They are powerful, reliable, comfortable and offer a ton of space to carry anything, even people. Now, throw a roof rack on top of them and your cargo carrying capacities are unbeatable. However, you want a reliable van ladder rack. That’s where we come in and recommend two of the best.

We won’t go onto excessive detail on both units recommended, but we are simply going to say we have an excellent option for anyone owning a Ford Transit, and another great choice for the Mercedes Sprinter. If you own other vans, browse the collection, there are other Aluminess, Front Runner and Prinsu ladder racks for your model.

We have discussed already why we like Front Runner so much. We have visited their factory, and we know there manufacturing process is outstanding. The Slimpro is an excellent and affordable van ladder rack, perfect for the Sprinter, for any ladder and that gives you even more space to safely transport more things over it.

Aluminess is a USA made ladder rack with a load rating of over 500 lbs. It comes with the option of choosing the slats which are stable and wide enough to easily and safely walk over them or a perforated sheet floor, which is even tougher than your traditional slats, making this a true tradie or contractor van rack. The raised side rails are excellent to keep ladders and other gear in place, as well as toe use for tying straps. Finally, the low profile of this rack reduces wind resistance and noise.

    Pros:

    • The stronger van ladder racks in the market
    • Reliable, durable, well built
    • Don’t require drilling to install
    • Allow you to install other accessories such as light bars

    Cons:

    • Not affordable at all

Their use is quite straightforward: put them below a board, a ladder, or any item you want as to protect the rack, the roof, and even the item itself. Thanks to the surface of these pads, whatever item you place them beneath of, will likely be more secure and remain in place, instead of sliding up, down or sideways.

Features To Look For In A Ladder Rack

    Weight

Ladder Racks are especially useful for carrying bigger loads on your vehicle and can make transporting it very easy. Different ladder racks have different load-bearing capabilities. Ladder racks depending on the model can carry between 500 and 1200 lbs. of additional cargo. Some can even carry more.

There are different types of ladder racks. Some of them are very lightweight and don’t put a lot of weight on your vehicle while some are heavy-duty racks that can withstand a lot more weight. So, depending on what you need you will choose the correct one for you.

    Adjustable Height

Ladder racks with adjustable height can be really beneficial for your truck. If you mount the one on your truck bed you can easily adjust the height so it goes over the driver's cabin if you need to haul something that might be longer than the truck bed itself.

    Safety

Ladder Racks are known to be the safest option for carrying your cargo because said cargo is very easy to tie down to the rack itself and prevent it to move. The last thing you want is for your items to fall out onto the road while transporting them. There are even racks with a lockable gripping mechanism.

    Tying Points

There are many places where you can secure your cargo onto the ladder rack using cargo ropes or tie-downs. Different bed racks have different ways of securing a shipment. Some of them have points where you can wrap around your rope and secure the haul that way.

Moreover, there are models that require you to use strap tie-downs in order to secure your cargo. Depending on what it is that you plan to transport and what vehicle you are using you will pick accordingly.

What Are The Different Types Of Ladder Racks?

    Ladder Rack For Truck

As the name states, they are racks that can be mounted onto your pickup truck bed and allow you to lift the platform and carry the cargo you wouldn’t be able to carry in that said bed.

    Ladder Rack For Van

Van ladder racks are useful if the ladders are longer than the storage area of the van itself. Besides ladders, van ladder racks can also be used to transport other types of items such as roof top tents, lumber, or even canoes and board.

    Ladder Roof Rack

    Ladder Rack FAQS

Is there a ladder rack compatible with a bed cover?

Not all of them. If you are looking for a ladder rack that works with a bed cover, you must make sure you are buying one that literally says it works with bed covers. We have a few in this collection: the ACS Tonneau, the EGR RollTrac, RCI bed racks with bed cover adaptors, and there are a few others in the market. Most ladder racks aren’t specifically made to use with tonneau or bed covers, therefore do make sure you look for the specific ones.

What is the safest way to carry a ladder with a vehicle?

The safest way is over a ladder rack. There is no safer way of transporting a ladder on a vehicle than over a rack. The rack helps keep the ladder in place, gives you numerous tie down points to secure if with straps, and even protects the roof of your vehicle from getting scratched, dented or damaged. The racks are also designed to handle large weights, so a ladder or multiple ladders shouldn’t be any trouble for a good ladder rack.

Is A Ladder Rack Worth It?

This is a very common question and truthfully the answer depends solely on your needs. If you are someone that goes on off-road adventures and has lots of gear that needs to be carried or you use your vehicle to regularly transport heavy cargo then yes, it is worth it.

How Much Should A Ladder Rack Weigh?

There is honestly no right answer for this. There are so many options to choose from and they all have different features. Some of the bulkier, heavy-duty ladder racks could be more durable and able to withstand more weight.

On the other hand, some of the lightweight racks are good because they do not put a lot of additional weight on your vehicle and thus enabling it to move easier however they may not be able to carry as much weight on them.

    Are Ladder Racks Universal?

While there are many models that can fit a variety of vehicles and models there isn’t a single ladder rack that can fit them all. They are built for a particular vehicle model however there are some adjustable racks that can be fitted onto a few more models as well.

Are Ladder Racks Just For Working Vehicles?

The answer to that is no. While they are being used by working vehicles to carry ladders, shovels, and other pieces of equipment they are also being used by outdoor enthusiasts to transport their cargo while on an off-road trip.

What Are Good Ladder Rack Accessories?

Some of the items that could be useful to have on your ladder rack would be; crossbars, mounting brackets, ladder rack straps, ladder rack clamps, PVC conduit carrying kit, and many more.

Do Ladder Racks Work To Carry Other Things?

As we already mentioned besides being able to carry ladders as the name states it is also being used to carry other things such as logs, pipes, shovels, axes, bikes, kayaks, and other construction equipment, and some can even be mounted with a roof top tent.

    Ladder Rack Installation

Installing a ladder rack will depend a lot on the type of ladder rack you get. For example, a truck bed ladder rack will be completely different than a roof rack. A bed rack might require drilling onto the bed of your truck, others don’t and instead use a j-hook mounting system, others slide into the t-rail system in the bed, other just clamp onto it.

When it comes to roof racks, you can also find some which drill onto the roof, others which just bolt onto the existing factory mounting points in the roof. As you can see, we can’t really say there is one single way of installing a ladder rack. There are different ways for different racks, so make sure you look at the features of each rack which should specify the installation process and look at the installation manual so you learn if you can do it yourself or not.
