Why Get A Roof Top Tent?

Now, without going into detail much, because we will do that later on, we want to talk a bit about what is a roof top tent and why someone should get it. We know and we know that you know that a regular camping tent is much more affordable and better suited for anyone looking to have a great time outdoors. However, a roof top tent can offer much more than a regular camping tent so let’s talk a bit about that.

A roof top tent is much easier to setup and close when not in use and you would only need about a minute or two to do so whereas with a regular tent you would need about 15-20 minutes. A roof top tent also offers better protection from wildlife and outside elements as it stays above ground on your vehicle and is constructed out of heavy-duty materials that can withstand even the harshest weather conditions out there.

A roof top tent also comes with a comfortable mattress that will provide a good night's sleep and comes with all sorts of accessories, one of which is storage pockets which are detrimental to keeping the inside of your tent nice and tidy. You can even use a roof top tent as a cargo carrier when closed but keep in mind that you can only store some smaller items there. Now, we’ve only scratched the surface but there is much more that you should know about roof top tents so let’s get to it!

    Types Of Roof Top Tents

Roof top tents are divided into two types; the ones that have a soft shell and the ones that have a hard shell. Again, we won’t go too much into detail about each one as we have a whole section that’ll explain it in great detail. Besides dividing the roof top tents into shell types we can also divide them into opening styles.

There are 3 opening styles in total and those are; “Pop Up”, “Fold Out”, and “Clamshell” opening styles. Now a hardshell roof top tent can have one of the 3 styles mentioned while the soft shell tent can only have one and that is the “Fold Out” style. Each of the styles has its own benefits but we will get to that soon.

There are many roof top tent designers and manufacturers around the world and sometimes it can be hard to choose the best one especially because it can be a great financial burden. What To Look For In A Roof Top Tent?

A roof top tent can be a big investment so it's very important to know what you should look for before getting one. First and foremost, you should always keep your budget in mind and try to find the highest quality tents within it. However, price is not the biggest factor here. You should always have dimensions, weight capacity, shell style, and opening style in mind before getting one. So, with that said, let’s go into detail about each one.

    Dimensions

We think it's pretty obvious why you should look at the dimension before getting a tent. First of all, you should always have enough room to comfortably spread out and sleep. Not just you but anyone that’ll be sharing the RTT with you. Even though some smaller RTT’s can be less expensive you shouldn’t opt for that if you’ll be having cramps every time you use it.

Make sure that you and your fellow campers will have enough space to fit horizontally so you don’t have to be in a fetal position all night long. Keep in mind that some smaller cars cannot support the weight of a bigger roof top tent before getting one that suits your dimensions. So always be sure if your vehicle can withstand the tent you want to get and if it can’t try to find the best possible replacement for it.

    Rooftop Tent Weight Limit

Each roof top tent has its weight limit and you should try not to cross it if you want to preserve it well. It goes without saying that you should always check the weight limit of a certain tent before getting it because you don’t want to get one and not be able to use it with all of your fellow campers of your family. Also, be sure to know your weight as well as the weight of the people that’ll be using it.

    Shell Style

    Hard Shell Roof Top Tent

Now as you can guess by the name, these roof top tents have a hard shell that can be made either from hard ABS plastic or even from high-quality aluminum. These RTTs are the sturdiest variant out of the two and can withstand the harshest weather conditions and even the strongest of winds. Many of the hard shell tents use nitrogen gas-charged struts so that they can deploy themselves in a matter of seconds after unlatching the latches.

They are also very aerodynamic. Most of them are very low profile and have a hard shell that will reduce wind drag and noise even when driving at high speeds. They are heavier than the soft shell ones but they also have better insulation as most of the hard shell RTT’s out there also have insulated shells. They can have 3 opening styles and those are “Pop Up”, “Fold Out”, and “Clamshell” opening styles. They are also more expensive than soft shell roof top tents.

    Soft Shell Roof Top Tent

Soft shell roof top tent as you can guess by the name does not come with any kind of shell. It does however still have a very sturdy and durable base. They are a lot lighter and a lot less expensive than the hard shell ones and can also provide good shelter from any outside elements. They don’t typically use gas-charged struts to open, instead, you would have to manually fold them out. That being said, these kinds of roof top tents can only have one type of opening style and it is the “Fold Out” style.

Unlike the hard shell ones that you can just close when not using it is recommended that you put on a PVC travel cover that the tent comes with to protect it from any outside elements. Soft shell roof top tents are also less aerodynamic and will not reduce wind drag and noise, unlike the hard shell ones. They are still a good style tent to buy especially if you have a smaller vehicle that cannot support as much weight but you would still want to have your own roof top tent for your next adventure.

    Opening Style

    Pop Up Roof Top Tent

Pop-up roof top tents have an opening mechanism just as it sounds. Their upper hard shell “pops up” and the tent is ready to be used. That means that you would only need about 30 seconds up to a minute to open up this kind of tent. All you need to do is unlatch the latches and watch it deploy itself. Some Pop Up roof top tents have gas-charged struts and some even use electromotors to push the top half of the shell into position.

Great thing about this style of tent is that you can have openings on all 4 sides that you can use to enjoy the scenery around you. Depending on the model, you will have the entrance point either on the side or the back of it. They are very durable and reliable and will definitely save you some time on your next overlanding adventure.

    Fold Out Roof Top Tent

Fold-out roof top tents are very easy to deploy too! It may not be as fast as the previously mentioned style but regardless it will not take you more than 2 minutes to do so. Unlike the previous type, this one has a half that is suspended in the air. Now don’t let that concern you in any way as these kinds of tents are also very rugged and have strong and durable floor panels that can withstand a lot of weight capacity.

They are also bigger than Pop Up tents and besides providing you with a 360-degree view of your surroundings it also offers a sky view window that can let in more sunlight during the day and will allow you to look at the stars at night. Fold out roof top tents can be used for both smaller or bigger vehicles, depending on the weight of the tent, and will make your next overlanding adventure a whole lot more enjoyable.

    Clamshell Roof Top Tent

Clamshell roof top tents got the name because they open up like a clam. Some of them have south-facing openings, however, there are also models of clamshell roof tents that have a side clam opening mechanism. They are also one of the easiest tents to open. They also use gas-charged struts and will take them less than a minute to deploy.

The only downside to them is that you would have one less side to enjoy the scenery. That means that you would have only 270-degree accessibility to enter and look outside your tent. There are also models that would include a sky view window as well. That is usually not a dealbreaker for most people but some do like having windows on all 4 sides.

    Price

The last thing on the list of what you should be looking for in a roof top tent is the price. Now as we mentioned before, if you have a certain budget and can’t go over it then you should try to find the best possible roof top tent that will suit your needs and your lifestyle for that price. However, if you do not have an exact amount that you should be spending, first try to look at all the things we talked about up until now.

We get that a good and reliable roof top tent is a big investment but sometimes it is worth spending a few extra bucks for something that you will be completely satisfied with. So before making any rash decisions and buying an RTT first try to explore all the options and see what suits you the best. Also, keep in mind that if you are trying to save up money a soft shell roof top tent will cost you less!

    Roof Top Tent Benefits

    Comfort

Having a roof top tent gives you more comfort on those long overlanding journeys or just on your camping trips. As we all know, sleeping inside your car is not exactly a comfortable option. Besides a roof top tent also comes with a thick comfortable mattress that’ll give you that good night's sleep that you’ll need for the next day.

    Safety

A roof top tent sits on the roof of your car or even on your truck bed. That means that it Is away from the ground and away from any danger. And you might be asking yourselves, what danger? Well, going on a trip in the outdoors is not exactly safe. At least not always. There is always a chance that you might run into wildlife, depending on where you go.

That’s why a roof top tent provides a safe clearance from the ground where no animal can get to you. But it's not only the animals that the roof top tent protects you from. In case of any floods or just heavy rain flow, a roof top tent can protect you from any unstable ground that can turn into mud and will keep you away from the soaking fields around you.

    Durability

A roof top tent is designed to be very durable and to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions and even the strongest of winds. No matter if it’s a hard shell roof top tent or soft shell, it will protect you from any outside elements. It is constructed out of durable fabrics and has a heavy-duty aluminum construction that can take a beating.

    Easy Setup

Another huge advantage of a roof top tent is that it can be deployed in under a minute. You heard that right! Some can take less and some can take up to 2 minutes to setup and it would take you about the same time to pack it up and get ready to move on. Just unlatch your roof top tent latches and fold it out, or if the tent has gas charged struts, just watch it deploy itself!
