Backwoods Adventure Mods DRIFTR Roof Rack for 2024+ Toyota Tacoma (4th Generation)
The DRIFTR roof rack transforms your 4th gen Tacoma into a true overland platform. At just 46 lbs, this modular aluminum rack delivers 700 lbs static capacity while maintaining the low profile and clean aesthetic the Tacoma deserves.
Built from 1/4" thick aluminum throughout, the DRIFTR uses triple-slotted extrusions and a comprehensive mounting system to create endless configuration possibilities. Mount storage boxes, awnings, lights, traction boards, fuel cans, rooftop tents, or custom accessories anywhere along the platform.
Modular Extrusion System
Five included extrusions (four for accessories, one for front fairing reinforcement) provide mounting locations across the entire rack platform. The 1x3 triple-slotted design accepts standard T-nuts that roll into channels from either end, enabling tool-free repositioning of accessories.
Pre-drilled holes and slots along both side rails accept additional extrusions anywhere you need them. Expand the system as your gear needs evolve. Extra extrusions sold in pairs.
The extrusion spacing accommodates Backwoods deck panels, awning brackets, and universal mounts. Third-party accessories using standard T-slot hardware integrate seamlessly.
Low-Profile Platform Design
The DRIFTR sits close to the roofline, maintaining the Tacoma's proportions while adding significant cargo capacity. The low profile reduces wind resistance compared to tall basket-style racks and keeps your center of gravity reasonable when loaded.
Side rail design incorporates cutouts that function as grab handles—useful when loading gear or accessing items stored on the rack. The cutouts also reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.
Adjustable Front Fairing
The front fairing adjusts to accommodate various configurations. Position it flush for a clean look or offset it forward to create space for mounting larger accessories behind the fairing.
Slotted mounting holes (1/4" and 3/8") across the front and rear fairings accept pod lights, light bars, or custom brackets. The front fairing includes a reinforcement extrusion that stiffens the leading edge while providing additional mounting options.
Rear Chase Light Integration
Rear fairing includes pocketed cutouts sized for Baja Designs S1 and S2 lights or similar compact chase lights. The tabbed design allows easy removal if you want full cutouts instead of pockets.
Chase lights mounted in the rear fairing provide high-visibility following lights for trail use, especially useful when traveling in groups or dusty conditions.
Static vs Dynamic Load Ratings
Static capacity: 700 lbs when vehicle is parked and stationary. This rating covers rooftop tents with occupants, heavy storage boxes, and people standing on the rack during camp setup.
Dynamic capacity: 300 lbs when vehicle is moving. This exceeds Toyota's factory roof load rating and accommodates typical overlanding gear including rooftop tents, fuel cans, storage boxes, and recovery equipment.
The dynamic rating accounts for forces during off-road travel—bumps, articulation, and vibration create loads beyond simple weight. The DRIFTR structure handles these dynamic forces while protecting your vehicle's roof.
Installation Process
No drilling required. The DRIFTR bolts directly to factory mounting points using included hardware. 3M tape and sealant provided for weatherproofing mounting locations.
Installation time: 2-3 hours with basic hand tools. Full video installation instructions available on Backwoods YouTube channel showing step-by-step process specific to the 4th gen Tacoma.
One person can complete the installation, though a helper makes positioning easier during initial fitment.
Compatible Accessories
The DRIFTR ecosystem includes Backwoods-designed accessories plus compatibility with universal T-slot hardware:
Backwoods Accessories:
- Universal deck panels (modular platform sections)
- HD awning brackets (heavy-duty mounting for 270° and standard awnings)
- Dogbone traction board mounts (MaxTrax, TRED, ActionTrax compatible)
- Universal storage boxes (weatherproof overland boxes)
- Light mounts and brackets
Third-Party Compatible:
- Agency 6 billet grab handles
- Rooftop tents (any brand with crossbar mounting)
- Shovel and tool mounts
- Fuel can mounts (Rotopax compatible with Dogbone mounts)
- Hi-Lift jack mounts
- Bike racks and cargo baskets
The triple-slotted extrusions use standard T-slot dimensions, allowing integration of industrial T-slot accessories and custom fabrication.
Construction Details
Material: 1/4" thick aluminum throughout—not thin stamped sheet metal. The substantial thickness provides rigidity without excessive weight.
Finish: Black powder coat included at no upcharge. Electrostatic application creates durable finish that resists trail damage and UV degradation.
Fasteners: All stainless steel hardware included. T-nuts provided for mounting accessories to extrusions.
Weight distribution: The platform design spreads loads across factory roof mounting points, preventing concentrated stress on any single location.
Lighting Integration
Slotted cutouts on front and rear fairings accept various lighting configurations:
- 1/4" and 3/8" slots for pod light brackets
- Space for up to 40" light bar on front fairing
- Rear chase light pockets (Baja Designs S1/S2 compatible)
- Wire routing channels prevent exposed wiring
The adjustable front fairing allows positioning lights forward of the rack platform for unobstructed beam patterns.
Deck Panel System
Optional deck panels convert open rack space into solid platform sections. The modular design lets you cover specific areas while leaving other sections open for larger items.
Panel benefits:
- Creates flat loading surface for soft bags and irregular items
- Prevents small items from falling through extrusions
- Reduces wind noise from open rack structure
- Available in various sizes to match your gear configuration
Panels mount using included T-nuts and hardware. Reposition or remove panels as needs change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between static and dynamic load capacity?
Static (700 lbs) is when the vehicle is parked—this covers rooftop tents with people inside. Dynamic (300 lbs) is when driving, accounting for forces from bumps and articulation. Both ratings exceed typical overlanding gear loads.
Can I mount a rooftop tent?
Yes. The 300 lb dynamic rating easily accommodates rooftop tents. Most RTTs weigh 100-150 lbs, leaving capacity for bedding and occupants during static use (700 lb static rating).
Do I need to drill holes in my roof?
No. The DRIFTR bolts to factory mounting points. Installation includes 3M tape and sealant for weatherproofing.
Will this fit my sunroof-equipped Tacoma?
Yes. The design maintains clearance for factory sunroof operation.
How many extrusions are included?
Five total: four for mounting accessories, one integrated into the front fairing for reinforcement. Additional extrusions sold separately in pairs.
Can I add more extrusions later?
Yes. The side rails have pre-drilled holes and slots for adding extrusions anywhere along the platform. Extra extrusions available in pairs.
What size T-nuts do I need for accessories?
Standard T-slot nuts for 1x3 extrusions. Roll-in style T-nuts included with rack for mounting Backwoods accessories. Most third-party T-slot accessories include appropriate hardware.
Will this work with my factory crossbars?
No. The DRIFTR replaces factory crossbars completely, providing a full-length platform system with significantly more capacity and flexibility.
How do deck panels attach?
Deck panels use T-nuts that slide into extrusion channels. No drilling or permanent modification required. Reposition panels as needed for different gear configurations.
Can I mount an awning?
Yes. Backwoods HD awning brackets designed specifically for the DRIFTR mount to side extrusions. Brackets accommodate most 270° and standard awnings.
Does this affect my vehicle warranty?
Installing aftermarket roof racks typically doesn't void factory warranty. However, any damage directly caused by rack installation may not be covered. Consult your dealer for specific concerns.
How do I route wiring for lights?
The extrusion channels provide protected wire routing. Run wiring through channels to front or rear fairings, then down A-pillar or rear hatch area. Installation video demonstrates wiring techniques.
