Most awnings give you coverage on one side and leave the rest of camp exposed. The 270 awning wraps around, extending along the full side of your vehicle and across the rear at the same time, with a squared-off rear panel that keeps coverage consistent all the way to the corner.
That geometry matters most at the tailgate. It turns your cook setup into a sheltered workspace, keeps gear dry from multiple directions, and creates a defined camp area you can actually use in the rain rather than a strip of shade you keep chasing. Guy lines and stakes are included, and FSR recommends using them in any degree of wind, or when you pair the awning with walls. For everyday camp use in calm conditions you will not need them. The Squared-Off Rear Is the Point
Plenty of 270 degree awning designs taper toward the back, which leaves a triangle of exposed ground exactly where your tailgate is. FSR squared this one off. The vehicle side covers 72 by 112 inches and the rear section covers 52 by 126 inches, so coverage stays consistent right into the corner. That is the area where you are actually working: cooking on the tailgate, sorting gear out of the back, standing around with a coffee while it rains. Square corners there are worth more than an extra few square feet somewhere you never stand.
Lighting Built Into the Arms
Dual-color dimmable LED strips run along the main arms, throwing warm light across the entire coverage area rather than a hot spot from one lantern. It is USB powered, so connect a battery bank and you have a fully lit camp without a separate lighting system, extra poles, or cable strung between trees. The dimmer means you can run it bright for cooking and low for sitting out afterwards. A dimmable light switch is included in the box; the battery bank is sold separately.

Redesigned Swing Hinges and Canvas Cover
An overland awning lives a harder life than a camping awning at a developed site, and the V2 revision reflects that. It added support at the swing hinges over the original design, and the improved canvas cover protects the mechanism from low-hanging branches on the trail. Those are the two places a vehicle awning typically fails: the hinge under repeated load, and the folded canopy catching something at speed. Both got attention in this generation.
Integrated Keder Rail
A keder rail on the backplate lets you swap between the included gear grid, support pole bag, and small accessory bag. It also accepts awning walls, which fully enclose the space and turn the covered area into a private room at camp. That is the upgrade path if you start using the awning as a changing area, a shower enclosure, or an extra sleeping space.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it really need no poles?
In calm conditions, no. The rigid arm design carries the entire canopy, so you swing it out, lock it, and you are done. Telescoping aluminum support poles, guy lines, and stakes are all included, and FSR recommends using them in any degree of wind or when you are running awning walls. An 80 square foot canopy catches a lot of air, so the honest advice is to stake it whenever there is a breeze. The freestanding capability is a convenience for still evenings, not a reason to skip securing it.
Driver side or passenger side?
You choose at purchase, and it is worth thinking about. Most people mount on the passenger side so camp sets up away from traffic when parked roadside, and so the driver door stays clear. Mount driver side if your kitchen slide, fridge, or drawer system lives on that side and you want the awning over your working area. Because the 270 also wraps the rear, the tailgate stays covered either way.
