Not every Jeep owner wants to drill through their hardtop. The Starlight is the Sherpa PEAK rack for the 2018-2026 Jeep Wrangler JLU that requires zero drilling and zero modification. It clamps to the hardtop gutters with eight 3/16 inch steel mounts, and it comes off leaving the top exactly as it was.
It spans 92.5 inches with 9 extrusion crossbars and is built in two separate sections, so you can pull the Freedom Top panels and keep a working rack on the rear of the top. Side panels are 1/4 inch aircraft-grade aluminum. At roughly 55 lbs and 2 inches tall, it is light and low. Secure gear by bolting into the crossbars or strapping directly to the side plates. Starlight or QDHD? The Real Decision
Sherpa makes two racks for the JLU, and they answer different questions. The Starlight asks nothing of your hardtop. The QDHD bolts through it into the roll cage. That single difference sets everything else.

Choose the Starlight if you want a jeep hardtop roof rack that leaves the top untouched, you are carrying bikes, boards, a cargo box, or light recovery gear, and weight on the roof matters to you.
Choose the JLU QDHD if you plan to run a rooftop tent, carry heavy loads, or want to take the whole hardtop off while keeping the rack mounted.
Why the Load Rating Is Lower
Load rating is set by what the rack attaches to, not by the rack itself. The Starlight's side plates are the same 1/4 inch aluminum as every PEAK rack. What limits it is the mounting point: the gutters on a Jeep hardtop are a composite panel, not a structural steel roll cage.
That is the trade Sherpa made deliberately. Clamping to the gutters is what makes the Starlight drill-free and removable without a trace. Bolting to the cage is what gives the QDHD its 1,200 lb static figure. Neither approach gets you both, and it is worth choosing with that in mind rather than discovering it after the rack is on.
Two Sections for Freedom Top Driving
The Starlight is built as two separate sections. Pull the front section with the Freedom Top panels and the rear section stays in place on the back of the hardtop, still carrying gear. Open-air front seats, loaded rack behind them.
What it does not do is let you remove the entire hardtop with the rack still mounted, since the rack rides on the top itself. If full topless driving with a loaded rack matters to you, that is exactly what the QDHD's roll cage mount is for.

Can I put a rooftop tent on the Starlight?
For most tents, no. The Starlight is rated 150 lbs dynamic, and the majority of rooftop tents weigh more than that on their own before any other gear. It is built for bikes, boards, cargo boxes, and light recovery gear. For a tent on a JLU, the Sherpa JLU QDHD is the right rack at 500 lbs dynamic and 1,200 lbs static. Does it really need no drilling?
Correct. Eight 3/16 inch steel gutter mounts clamp to the hardtop gutters. Nothing is drilled, cut, or modified, and when the rack comes off the top is exactly as it was. That is the main reason to choose the Starlight over the QDHD, which bolts through the hardtop into the roll cage.
Can I still take the Freedom panels off?
Yes. The rack is built as two separate sections, so you remove the front section with the Freedom Top panels and the rear section stays mounted and loaded. What you cannot do is remove the entire hardtop with the rack still on it, since the rack rides on the top. If that matters to you, the QDHD mounts to the roll cage and stays put with the top off.
Why is the load rating so much lower than the QDHD?
Because of what it attaches to. Both racks use 1/4 inch aluminum side plates. The Starlight clamps to the hardtop gutters, which are part of a composite panel. The QDHD bolts into the steel roll cage. The mounting point sets the rating, and the cage can simply carry far more. It is the direct trade-off for being drill-free.
Will it fit my JL two door or a soft top?

Which fairing should I choose?
Choose Full Height if you are not running a light bar, since it deflects the most air for the quietest ride. Choose Half Height if you want a single-row light bar to sit flush with the fairing line. Both cost the same. If a light bar is anywhere in your future plans, Half Height saves you buying a second fairing later.
