Mounting requires your axe handle to have a 12mm (0.5") hole through it. Some axes come with one. Most do not, which means drilling your own handle. It is a straightforward job, but it is permanent, so know it is coming. Call us at 844-200-3979 if you want to talk it through first.
A long-handled axe is the most awkward thing in a camp kit. Too long for most storage, with a head sharp enough that nobody wants it loose in the back of the vehicle. Wrapped in a blanket in the footwell is how most people carry one, which is neither safe nor convenient. This axe holder moves it outside and sorts both problems.
This axe mount bolts to the left or right side of your Slimline 3 rack. The axe head is housed and protected in a stainless cage rather than sitting exposed, and the handle secures through the bracket. It takes most axe sizes, and it can be locked with the Rack Accessory Lock in the small size or a padlock. Built from high-strength 3CR12 stainless steel with a weather-resistant black powder coat.
About That Hole
Worth covering properly, because it is the one thing that surprises people.
The bracket secures your axe through the handle, which needs a 12mm (0.5 inch) hole. Some axes, particularly ones sold with vehicle mounting in mind, already have one. Plenty of good axes do not, and you will be drilling it yourself.
That is not a difficult job on a timber or composite handle, but it is worth thinking about before you commit. Two things to keep in mind: drill where the bracket needs it rather than where it looks tidy, and a hole through a handle is permanent, so if the axe is an heirloom you may want a different one for vehicle duty. Follow the fitting instructions for placement.
The Head Gets Housed
This is what separates a proper roof rack axe mount from strapping an axe to a rack with ratchet straps.
Protected Edge
The head sits inside a stainless cage rather than exposed, so a sharp edge is not sitting at head height on the side of your vehicle.
No Movement
Housed at one end and secured through the handle at the other means the axe cannot shift, rattle or work loose on washboard.
Out of the Cab
A loose axe in the back of a vehicle is a genuinely bad idea in a rollover. Outside is where it belongs.
Locking It Down
An axe sitting on the outside of a parked vehicle is worth securing, and this bracket is built for it.
It can be locked with the Rack Accessory Lock in the small size, or with a standard padlock if you already have one. Either way, the axe is secured to the bracket and the bracket to the rack.
The Rack Accessory Lock is a separate purchase. A padlock you probably already own, which makes this one of the cheaper things on your rack to secure properly. Call us at 844-200-3979 if you want the lock sorted at the same time.
Built From the Right Material
An axe bracket holds a steel head, outside, permanently, through every kind of weather you drive in. Two metals sitting together in the wet is exactly where corrosion starts.
This bracket is high-strength 3CR12 stainless steel with a weather-resistant black powder coat, the same material and finish used across the Front Runner rack range. It resists corrosion where it matters and it matches your rack rather than looking like an afterthought bolted to the side.
Stainless steel installation hardware and fitting instructions are included, along with two bracket spacers and an M10 eye nut and bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really have to drill my axe handle?
Unless your axe already has a 12mm (0.5 inch) hole through the handle, yes. Some axes sold for vehicle use come with one. Most do not. It is a straightforward job on a timber or composite handle, but it is permanent, so if your axe is an heirloom you may want a second one for vehicle duty. Follow the fitting instructions for hole placement.
Will it fit my axe?
It accommodates most axe sizes and is designed for long-handled axes. The head is housed in the bracket and the handle secures through it, so the limits are head size fitting the housing and the handle taking a 12mm hole. Call us at 844-200-3979 with the axe you are running, or send a photo, and we will check it before you order.
Is the blade exposed?
No. The axe head is housed and protected within the bracket rather than sitting out in the open. That is the main safety difference between this and strapping an axe to a rack: a sharp edge is not sitting at head height on the side of your vehicle while you walk past it at camp.
Can I lock it?
Yes, with the Rack Accessory Lock in the small size or a standard padlock. Both are sold separately, though a padlock is something most people already own. Worth doing, since an axe on the outside of a parked vehicle is both visible and valuable.
Which side should I mount it on?
Either side works. The thing to plan around is what else is on the rack sides, since awning brackets, recovery board mounts and shovel mounts all live there too. An axe bracket is worth placing where it will not foul a tent opening or an awning deploying. Call us at 844-200-3979 with your current setup and we will work out the spacing.
