A shovel rolling around in the back is useless when you are axle deep in sand and need it now. A shovel strapped to the roof with ratchet straps is marginally better, until the strap works loose on washboard and you lose it somewhere on a forest road. This is the shovel mount that solves both.

This shovel mount for roof rack use locks onto your Slimline 3 in three positions: flat on top, angled on top, or mounted to the side. It is built from 3CR12 stainless steel with a black powder coat, and it handles more than a shovel. Oars and paddles, with two mounts for stability. Fishing rods and small diameter items, using the included V-strap bracket. At 2.9 lbs it costs you almost nothing in roof weight.

Three Positions, One Mount

Most shovel mounts give you one way to fit them and leave you to work around it. This one adapts to what else is already on your rack.

Flat on Top

The lowest profile option. The shovel lies flat against the tray, which keeps drag down and leaves the sides of the rack free for an awning.

Angled on Top

Raises the handle end, which can clear other gear and makes the shovel easier to grab without reaching across the tray.

Mounted to the Side

Frees the top of the tray entirely. Best when the platform is already carrying a tent or a full load and you need the space.

All three use the brackets supplied in the box, so you are not buying extra hardware to change your mind later. If the build changes, the mount moves with it.

One thing to check on the side position: make sure you have adequate clearance to other accessories, particularly a rooftop tent or an awning. Side mounting puts the shovel where those things open and deploy. Worth dry-fitting before you tighten everything down.

More Than a Shovel Holder

Dometic calls it a spade or shovel mount, which undersells it. As a shovel holder it does the obvious job, but the clamp and the included V-strap bracket take a good deal more than that.

Oars and Paddles

The mount will hold a paddle or an oar, and Dometic advises running two mounts for that rather than one. Makes sense: a paddle is long and thin, and a single clamp point lets it pivot and work loose over rough ground. Two mounts spaced apart hold it properly.

Fishing Rods and Small Diameter Items

The V-strap bracket comes assembled in the box, and it is what makes narrow items work. A shovel handle and a fishing rod are nothing alike in diameter, and the V-strap takes up the difference so a rod sits secure rather than rattling in an oversized clamp.

Recovery Gear Generally

Anything long, handled and awkward. An axe, a pry bar, a traction board handle. If it fits the clamp or the V-strap, it rides on the rack instead of in the back of the vehicle.

If you are on a Slimsport rack, you get both top positions but not the side mount. On a Slimline 3 you get all three.

Built From the Right Material

This mount lives outside, permanently, in whatever weather you drive through. It is made from 3CR12 stainless steel and finished in black powder coating.

3CR12 is the same material Front Runner uses in the structural components of the Slimline 3 racks themselves, chosen for corrosion resistance in wet and salty conditions. On a roof rack shovel mount that matters more than it sounds: this is a part that sits exposed, holds a muddy shovel, and gets hosed down with the rest of the rig. A mount that rusts out in two seasons is not a saving.

Installation hardware is stainless steel and supplied, along with fitting instructions.
