Planning a Rooftop Tent? Read This First.
The Crestone Sport is rated 150 lbs dynamic and 400 lbs static. That suits bikes, boards, cargo boxes, and camping gear. It is not the right rack for most rooftop tents. If a tent is in your plans, the PEAK Sherpa Crestone carries 300 lbs dynamic and 700 lbs static on the same 4Runner.
Not everyone needs a rack that can hold three adults asleep in a hardshell tent. Plenty of people want somewhere to put bikes, skis, a cargo box, and camping gear, without adding 60 lbs and four inches of height to the truck. The Crestone Sport is the Sherpa low profile roof rack built for exactly that, covering 2010-2024 4Runners.
It is the Sport Series version of Sherpa's best known 4Runner roof rack. Full length at 95 inches with 7 extrusion crossbars, but only 2 inches tall and roughly 40 lbs, which makes it Sherpa's lowest profile rack to date. Thinner aluminum side plates keep the weight down, while the mounting structure is the same industry-leading system used on the PEAK racks, with a direct load path and rubber roof seals. It mounts to Toyota factory points with no modification. Drop-in nuts slide into the crossbar slots for quick accessory changes. Black textured powder coat, black anodized crossbars, black oxide stainless hardware. Manufactured in Colorado. Lifetime Warranty.
The New Lineup
With the same quality you know and trust
The Sport Series line builds on the quality of the Sherpa name by opening up a new category of racks with the weekend warrior in mind. Sherpa always dreamed of making their premium racks more accessible while packing in some unique new features. This lineup blends lighter materials and a lower profile with the uncompromising integrity of their traditional mounting system, so you can Adventure with Confidence.
Crestone Sport or Crestone PEAK?
Sherpa makes two Crestone racks for the 4Runner. Same vehicle, same mounting system, different jobs.
| Crestone Sport | Crestone (PEAK) | |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Height | 2" | 2.5" |
| Weight | ~40 lbs | ~50 lbs |
| Crossbars | 7 x 47" | 9 x 47" |
| Dynamic Rating | 150 lbs | 300 lbs |
| Static Rating | 400 lbs | 700 lbs |
| Side Plates | Lighter, thinner aluminum | 1/4" aircraft-grade aluminum |
| Mounting | Same system, drill-free, rubber sealed | |
| Best For | Bikes, boards, cargo, camping gear | Rooftop tents and heavy loads |
Choose the Sport if you carry bikes, skis, a cargo box, and camping gear, and you care about garage clearance, wind noise, and keeping weight off the roof.
Choose the PEAK Crestone if a rooftop tent is in the plan now or later, or if you load the roof heavily.
Two Inches, and Why That Adds Up
Anyone shopping for a 4Runner low profile roof rack already knows the reason. A 5th Gen 4Runner is a tall vehicle. Adding a rack on top is where people discover their garage door clearance, their parking garage, and how much wind noise a rack can generate at highway speed.
Garage Clearance
At 2 inches this is Sherpa's lowest profile rack. That half inch versus a PEAK rack is sometimes the difference that matters.
Less Wind Noise
A lower rack presents less frontal area. Combined with the included fairing, that keeps highway noise down on a daily driver.
Ten Pounds Lighter
About 40 lbs versus 50. Less weight up high, which a tall SUV notices more than a truck does.
PEAK Mounting, Sport Weight
The compromise Sherpa did not make is in the mount. The Sport Series uses the same mounting structure that sits at the core of the PEAK racks: the strongest aluminum mounts on the market, a direct load path, and rubber roof seals protecting the vehicle.
What changes is the side plates, which are lighter and thinner than the 1/4 inch plates on a PEAK rack. That is where the weight and profile savings come from, and it is also why the load rating is lower. You are not getting a weaker mounting system, you are getting a lighter rack on the same mounting system.
Installation is drill-free using Toyota factory mounting points, with two adjustable leveling mounts to dial the rack flat on an uneven roofline.
Drop-In Nuts and Large Slots
The crossbars use aluminum extrusion with large slots, and the included drop-in nuts fall straight into those slots. No disassembly, no threading hardware in from the end of a bar.
That matters if your roof changes with the season. Bike trays in summer, a ski box in winter, a cargo basket for a road trip. Reconfiguring takes minutes rather than an afternoon, which is exactly what the Sport Series is aimed at.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a rooftop tent on the Crestone Sport?
For most tents, no. At 150 lbs dynamic, many rooftop tents weigh close to or more than that on their own before any gear. The Sport Series is built for bikes, skis, cargo boxes, and camping equipment. If a tent is in your plans, the PEAK Sherpa Crestone is the right rack for the same 4Runner at 300 lbs dynamic and 700 lbs static. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will help you pick.
What is the Sport Series?
It is Sherpa's lighter, lower profile line, built for the weekend warrior rather than the full expedition build. Sport racks use lighter and thinner side plates paired with the same mounting structure found in the PEAK Series, so you get the same drill-free, rubber-sealed mount on a rack that weighs less and sits lower. The tradeoff is load rating.
Is the mounting system weaker than a PEAK rack?
No. The mount is the same structure used at the core of the PEAK racks, with a direct load path and rubber roof seals. What differs is the side plates, which are lighter and thinner than the 1/4 inch plates on a PEAK rack. That is where the weight and profile savings come from, and it is also why the load rating is lower.
Will it fit my 4Runner?
If it is a 2010 through 2024 5th Gen, yes, mounting to Toyota factory points with no modification. It does not fit the 2025 and newer 6th Gen, which has different roof geometry. For that we carry the Sherpa Capitol. Call us at 844-200-3979 with your year if you are unsure.
How do the drop-in nuts work?
The crossbars use aluminum extrusion with large slots, and the drop-in nuts fall straight into those slots from above. You do not have to disassemble anything or thread hardware in from the end of a bar. Swapping between bike trays, a ski box, and a cargo basket takes minutes, which is the point on a rack aimed at people whose gear changes with the season.
Will it clear my garage?
It adds 2 inches to your roofline, which makes this the lowest profile 4Runner roof rack Sherpa builds. Whether that clears your particular garage depends on your door, your tire size, and any lift. Measure before you order. If you are close to the limit, that half inch versus a PEAK rack can be the deciding factor.
