Lower Profile, Same Capability
Most Tundra owners face a choice. Go full-height and deal with excessive cab height, wind drag, and garage clearance issues. Or skip the bed rack entirely and lose valuable cargo capacity.
The Backwoods Adventure Mods Mid-Height Tundra Bed Rack splits the difference. You get all the mounting versatility and load capacity of a full bed rack system, but the lower profile keeps your rooftop tent in line with your cab. Less drag, better aerodynamics, easier garage access.
This is an all-aluminium modular system designed for overlanders who want options without the height penalty. Mount a roof top tent, haul bikes and kayaks, or load up recovery gear and camp kit. The mid-height design keeps your centre of gravity lower and your rig more manageable on technical trails.
Fits short bed 2022+ (3rd gen) Toyota Tundras. Also fits short bed 2007-2021 (2nd gen) Tundras with bed tracks installed. Long bed 2007+ Tundras are compatible but the rack won't run the full bed length.
Why Mid-Height Works
Cab-height rooftop tent mounting. The mid-height design positions your RTT level with the cab roofline. This minimises wind resistance, reduces drag on the highway, and makes the entire rig feel more stable at speed and on off-camber terrain.
All-aluminium construction. The entire rack is aluminium — no steel rails hiding under powder coat. Lighter than steel, stronger than you need, and completely rust-proof. Your payload capacity stays intact.
Modular side rails and crossbars. The side rails accept the full Backwoods accessory line — storage boxes, bike trays, traction board mounts, fuel cans. Beefy crossbars provide secure tie-down points across the bed.
Keeps bed space free. Mounting gear on the rack leaves your actual truck bed clear for bulkier items, tools, or a drawer system. You're not choosing between camp gear and work gear — you're hauling both.
Quick one-person install. The rack breaks down into manageable sections. One person can lift, position, and bolt everything using the factory bed stake pockets. No drilling into your bed. Completely reversible.
Free black powder coat, free shipping. Backwoods includes powder coat as standard and ships free in the lower 48 states. No colour upcharges, no surprise freight fees.
Lifetime warranty. If it fails, Backwoods replaces it. The warranty is backed by real people who answer the phone, not a chatbot.

Installation
The mid-height bed rack installs using the factory bed stake pocket mounts on 3rd gen Tundras. For 2nd gen Tundras, bed tracks are required. No drilling into your truck bed — it's a completely reversible installation.
The rack breaks down into sections that one person can lift and position. Install takes 2-4 hours with basic hand tools. Backwoods provides detailed video installation instructions that walk through the entire process.
If you're adding accessories like storage boxes or bike mounts during install, plan an extra hour or two.
Mid-Height vs Full-Height
Backwoods makes both mid-height and full-height Tundra bed racks. Here's how to choose:
Choose Mid-Height if: You want your rooftop tent at cab height for better aerodynamics and lower centre of gravity. You prioritise garage clearance and highway fuel economy. You don't need massive vertical stacking capacity.
Choose Full-Height if: You want maximum vertical space for stacking gear. You're running a DRIFTR Topper add-on to create a seamless platform with a roof rack. You don't care about the extra height.
Both racks use the same modular accessory system and mounting points.
Compatible Accessories
The mid-height rack accepts the full Backwoods accessory line:
Aluminium Storage Boxes — Heavy-duty locking boxes with molle panels, gas strut lids, and adjustable interior shelving. Sold separately.
Dogbone Traction Board Mounts — Secure MaxTrax or similar boards to the side rails. Keeps them accessible without eating bed space.
Bike Tray Mounts — Standard bike tray systems bolt directly to the crossbars. Haul bikes without sacrificing bed room.
Universal Deck Panels — Flat panels span the rack and create a solid platform for gear or standing. Compatible with L-track and E-track systems.
Rotopax Mounts — Bolt fuel and water cans to molle panels on storage boxes or side rails.
All accessories mount without drilling, cutting, or custom fabrication.
FAQs
Does the Backwoods Mid-Height Tundra Bed Rack fit long bed Tundras?
Yes, it fits long bed 2007+ Tundras, but the rack won't span the full length of the bed. It's designed for short beds and works best on those applications.
Do I need bed tracks for a 2nd gen Tundra?
Yes. The mid-height rack requires bed tracks on 2007-2021 (2nd gen) short bed Tundras. 3rd gen Tundras (2022+) do not require bed tracks.
Can I mount a roof top tent on the mid-height rack?
Yes. The rack is engineered to handle rooftop tent loads. Verify your specific tent's weight and ensure even distribution across the crossbars.
Does this rack require drilling into my truck bed?
No. The rack uses factory bed stake pocket mounts on 3rd gen Tundras. For 2nd gen Tundras with bed tracks, it mounts to the tracks. No drilling required — completely reversible.
What's the difference between mid-height and full-height bed racks?
Mid-height keeps your rooftop tent at cab level for better aerodynamics and lower centre of gravity. Full-height provides more vertical stacking space and integrates with DRIFTR Topper add-ons. Both use the same accessory system.
