Platform Roof Rack
Platform Roof Racks: Low Profile Flat Rack Systems for Trucks & SUVs
A platform roof rack is a flat, full-length mounting surface that bolts to the top of your vehicle and provides a secure base for a roof top tent, awning, cargo, lights, and accessories. Unlike crossbars that only give you two narrow rails across the roof, a platform rack covers the entire roof area with a solid, flat platform designed for heavy-duty use. We carry platform roof racks from Prinsu, Front Runner, Eezi-Awn, and Westcott Designs for Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Gladiator, Lexus GX 550, and other vehicles. Prices start at $699. Every rack ships free. Platform Rack vs Crossbars
This is the first decision most people face when choosing a roof rack system. A platform roof rack gives you a flat, continuous mounting surface across your entire roof. Crossbars give you two narrow rails. Here is when each one makes sense.
Choose a platform rack when: You plan to mount a roof top tent. You want to carry multiple accessories (tent + awning + lights + cargo) simultaneously. You need maximum mounting flexibility across the full roof area. You want a low profile, flat roof rack that looks integrated with your vehicle. You are building an overlanding rig where the rack is a permanent part of the vehicle.
Choose crossbars when: You only need to carry a cargo box, bike rack, or kayak cradle occasionally. You want the lightest, lowest-drag option. You want to remove the rack when not in use. You are on a tighter budget. Browse our crossbar collection here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a platform roof rack?
A platform roof rack is a flat, full-length rack system that covers your vehicle's entire roof area with a solid mounting surface. Unlike crossbars that provide just two narrow rails, a roof rack platform gives you continuous space to mount a roof top tent, awning, lights, cargo, and accessories anywhere across the platform. Platform racks are the standard for overlanding because they offer maximum flexibility, load distribution, and accessory compatibility. They are sometimes called flat roof racks or low profile roof racks depending on their height above the roofline.
Do I need to drill into my vehicle to install a platform rack?
Most of the racks we carry are no-drill. Prinsu racks bolt directly to factory mounting points that already exist on your vehicle's roof. Front Runner Slimline II racks use vehicle-specific fit kits that attach to factory tracks, raised rails, or fixed points. Eezi-Awn K9 racks use gutter-mount clamps on vehicles with rain gutters. Some vehicles and rack combinations do require drilling, but we will tell you before you order. Call us at 844-200-3979 with your vehicle details and we will confirm the installation method.
How much weight can a platform roof rack hold?
Platform racks themselves are typically rated for 200-300+ lbs of dynamic load (while driving). However, your vehicle's roof has its own dynamic load rating, usually between 100-220 lbs. You must use the lower number. Static load (while parked, relevant for roof top tent camping) is usually 2-3x higher. Always check both the rack's rated capacity and your vehicle manufacturer's roof load specification. The rack is only as strong as the roof it sits on.
Which platform rack brand is best?
It depends on your priorities. Prinsu offers the best value: aluminum construction, no-drill install, and prices starting at $699. Front Runner offers the most accessories: their T-slot system is unmatched for modular customization. Eezi-Awn offers the toughest construction: steel K9 racks handle the heaviest loads and roughest conditions. Westcott Designs offers precision fitment for newer vehicles like the GX 550. For most overlanders building their first rig, Prinsu is the best starting point.
Will a platform rack affect my gas mileage?
Yes, but the impact varies. Low profile platform racks like Prinsu sit very close to the roofline and create minimal additional drag. Taller platforms or racks loaded with cargo create more wind resistance. Most owners report a 1-3% decrease in fuel economy with an empty rack installed, and more with cargo on top. If fuel economy is a high priority, choose the lowest profile rack that meets your needs. Every rack we carry is designed to minimize drag while maximizing function.
