Backwoods Adventure Mods DRIFTR Topper Add-on for Toyota Tacoma Bed Rack (2005-2026)
The DRIFTR Topper transforms your Tacoma bed rack into a complete DRIFTR platform system. This bolt-on addition provides the same modular extrusion system used on Backwoods roof racks, creating a unified cargo platform from cab to tailgate when paired with a DRIFTR roof rack.
At 40 lbs, the Topper adds approximately 4" of height above the base bed rack. This elevation clears the cab for longer wedge-style rooftop tents while creating a level platform that matches the DRIFTR roof rack height exactly.
Important: The DRIFTR Topper requires the Backwoods Overland Bed Rack (sold separately). The Topper bolts directly to the bed rack's crossbar system.
Complete DRIFTR Platform Integration
The Topper replicates the DRIFTR roof rack design on top of your bed rack. You get the same 1/4" thick aluminum side panels, triple-slotted extrusions, and modular accessory mounting that defines the DRIFTR system.
What this means: Every accessory compatible with DRIFTR roof racks works with the Topper. Deck panels, awning brackets, light mounts, traction board mounts, and universal T-slot hardware integrate seamlessly.
When you run both a DRIFTR roof rack and the Topper, you create a continuous platform across your entire Tacoma. Same extrusion spacing, same mounting hardware, same accessory compatibility front to back.
Six Included Extrusions
The Topper includes six triple-slotted 1x3 extrusions positioned across the bed rack platform. These extrusions provide mounting locations for accessories across the entire bed area.
Extrusion features:
- Triple-slotted channels accept standard T-nuts
- Roll-in T-nuts enable tool-free repositioning
- Pre-drilled side rails accept additional extrusions
- Standard T-slot dimensions (universal compatibility)
- Full-length channels (no interruptions)
Position accessories anywhere along the extrusions—you're not limited to pre-drilled mounting points. The continuous channel system provides infinite adjustment within the platform dimensions.
Heavy-Duty Side Rail Construction
Side rails use 1/4" thick aluminum (0.25" material) throughout. This substantial thickness provides structural rigidity while maintaining the DRIFTR's lightweight philosophy.
The side rails feature integrated handle cutouts that serve dual purposes: grab handles for accessing cargo and mounting locations for Agency 6 billet aluminum handles (sold separately through Agency 6).
Side rail benefits:
- 0.25" aluminum (not thin sheet metal)
- Pre-drilled holes for additional extrusions
- Handle cutouts for functionality and weight reduction
- Black powder coat finish included
- Mounting points for accessories along entire length
Rooftop Tent Applications
The Topper's primary purpose is enabling proper rooftop tent mounting when the base bed rack sits too low. Wedge-style RTTs and larger models often extend forward beyond the bed rack footprint, requiring additional height to clear the cab.
Height considerations:
- Base bed rack: Sits flush or nearly flush with cab
- With Topper: Adds ~4" of platform height
- Total with Topper: Adequate clearance for most wedge RTTs
The Topper's extrusion system provides solid RTT mounting across multiple attachment points. Most RTTs mount using crossbar-style hardware that integrates directly with the extrusions.
RTT mounting advantages:
- Level platform matches roof rack height
- Multiple extrusions distribute tent weight
- T-slot mounting accepts various RTT brackets
- Stable platform prevents tent movement
- Easy installation and removal of seasonal RTTs
Deck Panel System
The Topper accepts all DRIFTR universal deck panels (sold separately). These modular panels convert open extrusion space into solid platform sections.
Deck panel applications:
- Create flat surfaces for cargo
- Prevent items from falling through extrusions
- Organize gear zones (covered vs open areas)
- Reduce wind noise from open structure
- Provide mounting surface for soft cargo
Panels mount using T-nuts that slide into extrusion channels. Reposition or remove panels as cargo needs change. The modular design lets you cover specific areas while leaving other sections open for larger items.
Awning Integration
HD awning brackets (sold separately) mount directly to the Topper's extrusions. The elevated mounting position provides better awning deployment clearance and keeps the awning fabric above bed cargo.
Awning mounting benefits:
- Mounts to either side via extrusions
- Elevated position improves deployment
- Clears bed rack cargo beneath
- Compatible with 270° and standard awnings
- Robust mounting handles wind loads
When paired with a DRIFTR roof rack, you can run awnings on both the roof and bed rack if desired, or position a single awning at the ideal location for your setup.
Recovery Gear and Accessories
The Topper's extrusion system accommodates the full range of Backwoods accessories:
Compatible accessories:
- Dogbone traction board mounts (MaxTrax, TRED, ActionTrax)
- Shovel and axe mounts
- Rotopax fuel and water can mounts
- Hi-Lift jack brackets
- Light mounts and brackets
- Custom fabrication using T-slot hardware
Position recovery gear for optimal accessibility. Front-mounted traction boards, side-mounted shovels, rear-mounted fuel cans—the continuous extrusions support any configuration.
Roof Rack Pairing
The DRIFTR Topper achieves its full potential when paired with a DRIFTR roof rack for your Tacoma generation. This combination creates the complete Backwoods overland platform.
Unified platform benefits:
- Continuous DRIFTR system from windshield to tailgate
- Level platform (roof rack and Topper align)
- Identical accessory compatibility throughout
- Cohesive visual appearance
- Maximizes total cargo capacity
Mount a rooftop tent on the Topper, storage boxes on the roof rack, awning on either platform, and recovery gear along the sides. The unified system enables complete gear organization across your entire Tacoma.
Installation Process
The Topper bolts directly to the Overland Bed Rack's crossbar system. Hardware included. Installation requires basic hand tools and typically takes 30-45 minutes.
Installation steps:
1. Position Topper on bed rack crossbars
2. Align mounting brackets with crossbar holes
3. Install provided hardware finger-tight
4. Verify alignment and level
5. Torque hardware to specification
6. Install extrusions if removed for shipping
One person can complete installation, though a helper makes positioning easier. The Topper arrives mostly assembled—attach it to the bed rack, install extrusions, and you're ready to load cargo.
Weight and Dimensions
Topper weight: 40 lbs
Combined with base rack: 85 lbs total (45 lb rack + 40 lb Topper)
Height addition: Approximately 4" above base bed rack
Material: 1/4" aluminum side rails, aluminum extrusions
The modest 40 lb addition maintains the system's lightweight advantages while providing substantial functional expansion.

Requires: Backwoods Overland Bed Rack for 2005-2026 Toyota Tacoma (sold separately)
Fits: All Tacoma generations with Backwoods bed rack installed (2nd, 3rd, 4th gen short bed)
Compatible with: All DRIFTR roof rack accessories
The Topper does not fit competitor bed racks—it's specifically engineered to integrate with Backwoods' bed rack mounting system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the base bed rack included?
No. The DRIFTR Topper requires the Backwoods Overland Bed Rack (sold separately). The Topper is an add-on that bolts to the bed rack.
How much height does the Topper add?
Approximately 4" above the base bed rack surface. This provides adequate clearance for most wedge-style rooftop tents to clear the Tacoma's cab.
Will this make my truck too tall?
Total height with Topper: base bed rack + 4" Topper + rooftop tent height. Most setups remain under 7-8 feet total, fitting standard garage doors and parking structures. Measure your specific configuration if clearance is a concern.
Can I use DRIFTR roof rack accessories?
Yes. The Topper uses identical extrusions and mounting systems as DRIFTR roof racks. All accessories are fully compatible.
Do I need this to mount a rooftop tent?
Not always. The base bed rack accommodates most RTTs. The Topper is needed when your RTT extends forward and requires additional height to clear the cab, or when you want DRIFTR accessory compatibility on your bed rack.
Can I install this myself?
Yes. Installation takes 30-45 minutes with basic hand tools. The Topper bolts to the bed rack's crossbar system using included hardware.
Will this work with my DRIFTR roof rack?
Yes. When properly installed, the Topper creates a level platform with DRIFTR roof racks, providing continuous DRIFTR compatibility from cab to tailgate.
How much weight can the Topper support?
Weight capacity depends on the base bed rack structure and your Tacoma's payload rating. The Topper itself handles typical overland loads including rooftop tents, storage boxes, and recovery gear.
What's included?
DRIFTR Topper with 1/4" aluminum side rails, six triple-slotted extrusions, all mounting hardware, black powder coat finish, and installation instructions.
Can I add more extrusions?
Yes. The side rails have pre-drilled holes for adding extrusions anywhere along the platform. Extra extrusions sold separately.
Does this require the DRIFTR roof rack?
No. The Topper provides DRIFTR functionality on your bed rack whether or not you have a roof rack. However, the pairing creates the complete platform system.
Will Agency 6 handles fit?
Yes. The side rail cutouts accommodate Agency 6 billet grab handles (sold separately through Agency 6, not through Backwoods).
