Between a Rock and Your Fuel Tank
Cali Raised LED fuel tank skid plate for the 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma.
You Need TRD Off-Road Fuel Tank Straps
This plate bolts to the 4 factory bolts that come with TRD Off-Road fuel tank straps. If your Tacoma does not already have those straps, you need them before the plate can mount. The Toyota part numbers are below.
Also: 4WD only. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will check what your truck already has.
Of every skid plate on a Tacoma, the fuel tank one protects the part people think least about. The tank is thick plastic, and plastic is strong right up until something sharp drags across it. Gouging and slicing are what kill a plastic tank, and they happen on exactly the kind of rock shelf you only notice after you have already slid across it.
This Cali Raised LED Tacoma skid plate covers that. It is available in 3/16 inch steel or 1/4 inch 5052 aluminum, finished in durable semi-gloss black powder coat, and it is 100% bolt-on with zero modification to the truck. It fits 2005-2023 Tacomas, 4WD only, and it is crafted by American welders in Fort Worth, Texas. Two-year Cali Raised LED warranty.
Steel or Aluminum?
You choose at checkout, and the difference is substantial enough to think about rather than default on.
| Steel | Aluminum | |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 3/16" | 1/4" 5052 |
| Weight | 37.9 lbs | 16 lbs |
| Impact Behaviour | Takes repeated hits, dents rather than deforms | Lighter, slides well, deforms more on a hard strike |
| Corrosion | Relies on the powder coat | Naturally corrosion resistant |
| Best For | Hard rock crawling, regular impacts | Overlanding, weight-conscious builds, salted roads |
The weight difference is the headline: steel is more than twice the weight of aluminum, 37.9 lbs against 16. On a truck already carrying a rack, a tent and a fridge, 22 lbs hanging under the rear is worth considering.
Choose steel if you crawl rock regularly and expect repeated hard contact. Choose aluminum if you overland, watch payload, or live somewhere they salt the roads in winter.
About the TRD Off-Road Straps
This is the one thing that catches people out, so here it is in full.
The skid plate is designed to use the 4 factory bolts that come with TRD Off-Road fuel tank straps. If your Tacoma is a TRD Off-Road or already has those straps fitted, you are set and no extra hardware is needed. If it does not, you need the straps before the plate will mount.
| Strap | Toyota Part Number |
|---|---|
| Front strap | 77602-04020 |
| Rear strap | 77601-04020 or 77601-04060 |
Beyond the straps, no additional hardware is necessary. The plate uses your factory bolts. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will help you work out whether your truck already has what it needs.
What It Is Actually Protecting Against
Worth being precise about what a gas tank skid plate is for, because a plastic tank is not as fragile as people assume.
Gouging and Slicing
The real threat. A sharp rock edge dragging across plastic is what opens a tank, not blunt impact.
Not Crush Damage
The tank is very thick plastic and genuinely strong. With the skid attached it handles a lot of weight.
Confidence Over Terrain
Knowing the tank is covered changes how you approach a shelf rather than stopping to scout every one.
That distinction matters because it tells you what the plate does and does not need to be. It is not there to absorb a dead-drop onto a boulder. It is there to stop anything sharp ever touching the tank.
Bolt-On, and Reversible
The plate is 100% bolt-on using existing bolt holes. You will remove some factory items during the install, but nothing is drilled, cut or permanently altered.
That means you can go back to stock at any time, which matters if the truck is leased, if you are planning to sell, or if you simply want the option. Cali Raised includes installation instructions, and there is an install video available if you prefer to watch it done first.
Running the TRD Pro Skid Already?
Good news for this particular plate. The fuel tank skid works alongside the TRD Pro skid, as do the transfer case, LCA and shock skids.
The ones that do not are the front and transmission skids, which conflict with the TRD Pro plate. So if you are building out a full underbody set, that is the pair to plan around. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will map out which plates work together on your truck.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need TRD Off-Road fuel tank straps?
Yes. The plate is designed to use the 4 factory bolts that come with the TRD Off-Road straps. If your Tacoma already has them, nothing else is needed. If not, the Toyota part numbers are 77602-04020 for the front strap and 77601-04020 or 77601-04060 for the rear. Call us at 844-200-3979 and we will check what your truck has before you order.
Steel or aluminum?
Both are the same Tacoma skid plate, just different material. Steel at 3/16 inch and 37.9 lbs takes repeated hard impacts better, which suits regular rock crawling. Aluminum at 1/4 inch 5052 and 16 lbs saves 22 lbs and resists corrosion naturally, which suits overlanding, payload-conscious builds and salted winter roads. Most overlanders go aluminum. Most dedicated rock crawlers go steel.
Will it work with my TRD Pro skid plate?
Yes. The fuel tank skid works with the TRD Pro skid, along with the transfer case, LCA and shock skids. The ones that do not are the front and transmission skids. If you are planning a full underbody set, call us at 844-200-3979 and we will map out what works together on your truck.
Is it really bolt-on, and can I go back to stock?
Yes to both. It is 100% bolt-on using existing bolt holes, with no drilling or cutting. You will remove some factory items during the install, but nothing is permanently altered, so you can return the truck to stock at any time. Install instructions are included and an install video is available.
Is a plastic fuel tank really at risk?
From the right kind of damage, yes. The tank is very thick plastic and genuinely strong, and with the skid attached it handles a lot of weight. What it is vulnerable to is gouging and slicing from sharp rock edges dragging across it, and that is exactly what this plate prevents. It is not there to absorb a dead drop. It is there so nothing sharp ever reaches the tank.
