Most people end up choosing between two things for the sides of a 4Runner: a step that makes getting in easier, or rock sliders that protect the rockers on the trail. The Step Edition is built so you do not have to choose. It is a true frame-mounted slider in 1.75" DOM tubing with a .120" wall, and it sits flat at 0 degrees, with optional top plates, so the kids, the dog and whoever is loading the roof rack have a proper place to put their feet.
These 4Runner sliders are aimed at the truck that does a bit of everything: school runs on weekdays, trails at the weekend, a roof rack that gets loaded and unloaded constantly. They bolt on with no drilling, work on both KDSS and non-KDSS trucks, and fit every 5th gen 4Runner from 2010 to 2024.
Check Your 4Runner Before You Order
Limited and TRD Sport: these will only fit once the X-REAS system and the side moldings have been removed. They are not compatible with X-REAS left in place.
2010-2013 trucks: the Rock Trim Panel has to come off for the sliders to fit properly.
Lexus GX: not compatible, despite the shared platform.

Running Boards, Side Steps or Step Sliders?
If you have been looking at 4Runner running boards or 4Runner side steps, this is worth a minute. They all help you climb in. Only one of them is designed to take a hit.

Most 5th gen 4Runner running boards are steps first. Lean the truck onto a rock with one and it can bend, and take the rocker with it. Step sliders give you the same easier access, but the step is a frame-mounted tube that is meant to carry weight. If your 4Runner leaves the tarmac at all, it is the safer way to get a step.
Top Plates or No Top Plates?
Top plates are optional and only included when you select them. They fill the space between the slider tube and the body, turning the step into a flat platform rather than a single round tube.
With Top Plates
A proper flat step. Easier for kids and passengers, and much better when you are standing on it to reach the roof rack.
Without Top Plates
A cleaner, more open look and a slightly lighter setup. You step on the tube itself, which is fine for adults getting in and out.
The Popular Setup
Kick out, powder-coated sliders and bed liner-coated top plates. Bed liner gives the plates real grip in wet or muddy boots.
KDSS and Non-KDSS, Same Part
A lot of 5th gen 4Runner sliders and 4Runner rock sliders either skip KDSS trucks or ask you to work around the system's hydraulic lines. These do not. The Step Edition is compatible with both KDSS and non-KDSS 4Runners, with no separate part number and no modification to the KDSS setup.
How They Are Built
The tubing is 1.75" DOM, short for drawn over mandrel. It is welded, then drawn over a mandrel that work-hardens the steel and leaves an even, seamless-finish wall. Under a point load it bends predictably instead of folding at a weak seam. The .120" wall is the figure worth comparing when you shop, because plenty of sliders only quote the outside diameter.
From underneath: the full frame plate and clamping mounts that make these sliders, not steps.
- Full frame plate: the mounting plate spans the frame rather than tabbing onto one face, so the load goes into the frame.
- Front and rear clamping support: spreads the load along the rail instead of concentrating it at one mount.
- Fully gusseted: every joint is braced, which is what stops a slider working loose over years of hits.
- Grade 8 hardware: included.
Kick Out or No Kick Out
A kick out is an angled extension at the rear of the slider that flares away from the body. It pushes rocks and debris away from the rear of the door and the quarter panel, which is the part of the body that swings widest on a tight turn. No kick out keeps the slider straight and tight to the body for a cleaner look. Both are equally strong, so choose for looks and how you use the truck.

Any finish on a rock slider is a wear item. The tube is designed to be dragged over rock, and the high spots will show steel eventually. That is the slider doing its job.
Step Edition or Trail Edition?
Cali Raised also build a Trail Edition of their 4Runner sliders. Both are true frame-mounted sliders. The difference is the angle, and what that does to how you use the truck.

✓ The Honest Version
If your 4Runner carries passengers most days, or you are up on the roof rack a lot, the Step Edition will make you happier, even though it hangs a little lower. If it mostly lives on rock shelves and off-camber climbs, look at the Trail Edition instead.
Installation
100% bolt-on, no drilling or cutting, with the Grade 8 hardware supplied. Cali Raised rate it easy to moderate and estimate about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Two people. At about 45 lbs each, holding a slider up while you start bolts on your own is a fight.
- 2010-2013 owners: take the Rock Trim Panel off first.
- Start every bolt before torquing any. The clamping design needs to find its own alignment on the frame rail.
- Check the gap to the body on both sides before final tightening, and fit the top plates last if you ordered them.
- Re-torque after the first real trip. Standard for anything frame-mounted that takes impacts.

Are these real rock sliders or just running boards?
Real rock sliders. They mount to the frame with full frame plates and front and rear clamping, in 1.75" DOM tubing with a .120" wall and full gusseting. The flat profile and optional top plates make them a good step too, but they are built to take the truck's weight on a rock, which most running boards are not.
Do they fit a KDSS 4Runner?
Yes. They are compatible with both KDSS and non-KDSS 4Runners, with the same part and no modification to the KDSS system.
